The Kansas City Chiefs’ ten-year playoff streak came to an abrupt end last Sunday. The Chiefs came to Arrowhead Stadium in a tough game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The 16-13 loss dropped Kansas City’s record to 6-8 and eliminated last season’s AFC champions from playoff contention. To make matters worse, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending ACL injury while trying to pick up yards in the final minutes of the game.
Mahomes underwent a procedure in Dallas to repair damage to his left ACL, the Chiefs confirmed Monday. According to NFL Network, the doctor also needed to repair the torn LCL in Mahomes’ knee. The Chiefs later said Mahomes “will begin his rehabilitation program immediately.”

During the Week 16 edition of NFL legend Tom Brady’s “Let’s Go!” podcast, the seven-time Super Bowl champion reflected on the difficult rehab process he went through after his ninth season ended with the same injury.
“It’s a tough rehab. It’s one of the toughest rehabs. I just remember every day I’m pushing myself,” Brady said. “And it’s always like pain and discomfort, except you’re progressing through that pain and discomfort, which is a tough mental thing to deal with. You feel like, God, every day, it doesn’t feel right. Except you’re getting range of motion and you’re getting strength and you’re on the road to recovery. So I wish him the best.”

Brady then offered advice on where Mahomes should focus during the process.
“The only thing you can do is focus on what’s in front of you and don’t look back,” he said. “And just say, OK, this is part of what my career is going to be. And a lot of people have gone through it and a lot of people have overcome it. You have to put a lot of diligence into the rehabilitation process. And I always feel like the sooner you rehab, the sooner you can get back to coaching a sport that you know you love.”

Brady added: “I think sometimes people will go on their own. Instead of training mode, they’re in recovery mode. I think you have to go through recovery mode as soon as possible and then get back into training mode. But that takes total commitment and it’s the same commitment that great professional athletes do well in their career. When you go through recovery mode, you need that determination process, and you need that determination process.”
After appearing in one game in 2008 due to injury, Brady recovered and played in every regular season game in 2009. He went on to be honored as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
In a message posted on social media after receiving the injury, Mahomes thanked the fans and said he would put “Trust in God”.

“I don’t know why this had to happen,” Mahomes wrote. “And I won’t lie, it hurts. But what we can do now is Trust in God and attack each day again and again. Thank you Chiefs, the kingdom for always supporting me and for all those who have come and sent prayers. I will come back stronger than before.”
Gardner Minshew will step in for Mahomes starting in the Chiefs’ Week 16 game against the Tennessee Titans.
