The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) is proposing a ban on songs with the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which many consider an anti-Semitic call for violence against Jews.
This comes less than a week after a mass shooting during Hanukkah celebrations at Bondi Beach left at least 15 dead.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said that with the ban, police would be given more power to demand that protesters remove face masks during demonstrations, according to the Associated Press.

“Hate speech or incitement to hate has no place in our society,” Minss said Saturday, AP reported.
“Horrifyingly, recent incidents have shown that the song ‘globalize the intifada’ is hate speech and encourages violence in our society,” Minss told reporters. “You’re running a very dangerous racket if you think about using that phrase.”
The proposed ban would also prevent the public display of ISIS flags or symbols. The charges are punishable by up to two years in prison and may include fines, according to the AP.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Friday intelligence had again confirmed that the Bondi Beach shooting was inspired by ISIS.
“We have been informed that the National Intelligence Service has identified a common Internet video from ISIS that confirms that this was an ISIS-inspired attack,” Albanese told reporters, according to the Times of Israel. He also announced a gun return plan and a “day of reflection” following the deadly attack.
The announcement of the proposed NSW ban comes after Albanese promised to introduce measures to curb dissent and hate speech, including expanding the definition of hate speech offences.

Australia had been dealing with a rise in anti-Semitism before the Bondi Beach attack, with more incidents following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a prominent member of the Jewish community killed in the Bondi Beach attack, wrote a letter to Albanese about his concerns about growing anti-Semitism. Schlanger urged the prime minister not to “betray Jewish people.“
