The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is disputing claims by Senate Democrats that 2025 has become the deadliest year in decades for immigrants in federal custody.
In a post to X on Saturday, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin criticized the allegations made by the Senate Judiciary Democrats’ account, saying “30 immigrants have died in ICE custody since Donald Trump took office, making 2025 the deadliest year in ICE detention since the early 2000s.”
McLaughlin quickly responded, accusing Senate Democrats of “trying to twist information to smear ICE law enforcement.”
“There was no increase in the death rate. According to the data of the last ten years, the death rate in the stock is 0.00007%,” he said.

McLaughlin also pointed out that those held in ICE custody receive proper care and a “higher standard of care” than most US prisons.
“As the facility expands rapidly, we have maintained a higher standard of care than most prisons that house American citizens – including providing access to appropriate medical care,” he said. “For many illegal immigrants this is the best health care they have received in their entire lives.”

The response came just one day after DHS revealed that ICE’s “Christmas gift to the American people” came early as agents pulled illegal immigrants with criminal records off the streets.
“During this holiday season, ICE is working around the clock to ensure quiet nights and safe roads,” DHS said in its announcement.

On Friday, DHS said ICE has arrested illegal immigrants across the country whose criminal records include burglary, robbery and aggravated kidnapping. Homeland Security has declared the latest defendants to be some of the “worst of all.”
