The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has asked National Public Radio (NPR) CEO Katherine Maher to resign ahead of the organization’s cost reductions, according to a New York Times piece published on Tuesday.

The New York Times reported that since becoming NPR’s CEO in 2024, Maher has received criticism not only from “right-wing activists” for alleged political bias but also from other public broadcasters.

According to two people “familiar” with the talks, Patricia Harrison, chief executive of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, reportedly spoke with Maher in the spring about whether to “acknowledge the concerns of listeners who view NPR’s reporting as biased.”

“Ms. Maher rejected that proposal,” the Times reported. “He didn’t believe NPR was biased, and he thought saying so would undermine the organization and fail to criticize those who criticized the organization, according to a person familiar with his thinking. After his refusal, tensions between the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and NPR came to light. Ms. Harrison told Ms.

The call reportedly came before President Donald Trump issued an executive order in May to defund NPR and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), both of which received funding from CPB.

Congress later stripped more than $1 billion in funding from the CPB in a defunding package pushed by Trump in July.

The New York Times report also revealed ongoing tensions between NPR and CPB that led to NPR suing CPB for allegedly redirecting conference funding away from the radio organization in September. As the case went to trial, emails between the two organizations became public at the time of discovery, revealing further conflicts.

“It’s a fantasy scenario — we get the money and the CPB goes through an act of Congress,” one NPR official said in an email in April.
