Elon Musk Says In One Week He Will Fully Reveal Why Your X Timeline Is… Like That

Elon Musk says that next week, the new X algorithm—meaning all the code that determines what you see in your X feed—will be made open source.

This comes amid significant global scrutiny of the @grok X account that apparently fulfills request after request to provide photos of scantily clad people—including children—without permission. But the expected update is related to something Musk has said he’s wanted to do since joining Twitter in 2022, saying at the time that “making algorithms open source to increase trust” was part of his ambition for the site.

This latest apparent promise is probably the broadest he’s made with an actual end date attached, and it comes with an accelerated timeline. He said that in 2022, “Twitter will open source all the code used to recommend tweets by March 31,” giving it a two-week window at that time, and the site released a Github repository that day containing at least a summary of the recommendation algorithm. Most of the files in that area are from that first upload, although some appear to have been updated as recently as four months ago.

This was a partial code release, and it didn’t meet everyone’s expectations for an open source social network. For example, a 2023 report that claimed Musk wanted algorithm changes to increase the visibility of his posts came from leaked documents and anonymous conversations with X employees, not just a code review. And when Musk revealed the changes he wanted to make in 2024, Mark Cuban asked him “Can you post the source code of the expected algorithm, before you do it? So that users can give feedback?”

And it almost goes without saying that the site has been criticized for favoring and promoting right-wing views. Last year’s report aims to show that this apparent new bias is systematic. UX is also one of the places where shocking, unconfirmed photos of Charlie Kirk’s murder went viral last year.

Another reason that may suddenly become clear: last year, investigators in Paris, France opened an investigation into the possible manipulation of the X algorithm, an effort that Musk said “distorts French law to fulfill a political agenda and, ultimately, limits freedom of expression.”

This latest expected update feels like a step closer to many people’s idea of what “open source” means. Musk’s post about the change says users can expect to see “code used to determine which live posts and ads are recommended for users” and that the release “will be repeated every 4 weeks, with full developer notes, to help you understand what’s changed.”
