CNN also reviewed a 2016 report the network did about the operation of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that has recently gone viral, with reporters noting that “loud rhetoric,” protests, and an increased tactical presence have enabled the agency to operate under the Trump administration.

The report focuses on a ride in May 2016 in Chicago, where reporter Pamela Brown undercover a team of ICE agents while arresting undocumented criminals.

Some social media users, who recently found the clip, used the image to suggest a double standard of the media, comparing the agency’s excellent structure during the Obama administration to the current coverage under the Trump administration.

After reviewing the archived footage on Friday, Brown told viewers that he noticed the agents were “very professional” and “respectful” when they met. He mentioned the lack of public opposition at the time, saying there were no protesters and saying people were raided in the morning to avoid public disruption.

CNN correspondent Priscilla Alvarez noted that while similar jobs are going on across the country, media attention has shifted to Minneapolis because of the scale of the jobs and the massive public backlash.

He noted that agents are now working in a “high-evidence area,” where they are met with “protesters with these whistles.”

“They’re directly responsible, right? They’re enforcing immigration laws,” Alvarez said. “But when they’re put in situations like street policing, that kind of highlights what their normal jobs are like and what their jobs are like off the field.”

Alvarez added that the current climate is “sour” because of the presence of many law enforcement agencies, including the US Border Patrol. He pointed out that the hot language surrounding the organization has “taken a toll” on the environment.

“There’s a lot of talk, and then it’s like there’s a lot of agents in a high-evidence area where there’s people showing up to protest, and where the agents are rounding up a lot of undocumented immigrants to meet the task of the authorities,” said Alvarez.

“And using aggressive tactics like we’ve seen in the videos,” Brown added.

Scrutiny of ICE and its tactics has increased since last week fatal shooting by an ICE agent of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, authorities say she was trying to use her car as a weapon against the agent.

On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security said an ICE agent was hospitalized after being set up during an attempted arrest of a Venezuelan national in Minneapolis during a traffic stop.

While trying to detain the suspect, DHS says the suspect “violently struck the officer,” and two others came out of the building and attacked the officer with an ice pick and a broom handle.
