Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota senators and representatives asked US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to leave the state Saturday, hours after a deadly shooting in the city.

“The city of Minneapolis is making an announcement after today’s shooting incident to encourage the judge to issue a temporary restraining order on Monday that will provide immediate relief and help, which will help stop this operation that has become very dangerous in the city of Minneapolis, in the state of Minnesota that has resulted in the shooting of many people and the tragic death of people,” said the Mayor in a press conference.

Frey said the “chaos we’re seeing” is directly caused by ICE and the Trump administration.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who joined Frey on stage, said: “Our message is clear and direct. We need snow in Minnesota.”

Klobuchar asserted that ICE “doesn’t make us any safer as the tragic, terrible murder this morning, as people saw in that video, shows us that they are making us less safe.”

He said the roughly 3,000 ICE and Border Patrol agents in the area “outnumber the sworn police in Minneapolis and St. Paul by three to one, and are larger than 10 metropolitan police departments.”

“This is completely counterintuitive, completely disproportionate,” she said. “Now three people have been shot, two fatally. One: Renee Good, a mother of three, and now Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, who is a nurse.”

Pretti was shot and killed by an ICE agent Saturday morning while conducting immigration enforcement.

“This city was under siege,” Klobuchar said, while laying the blame on the Trump administration.

“I myself have warned them that there are many deaths, this is happening a lot,” he said. “And clearly they’re not listening. So, we’re asking people across the country to talk to their Republican representatives to make it clear that this is not our America. This has to stop.”

Frey said he has requested help from the National Guard to assist the approximately 600 officers of the Minneapolis Police Department.

“Minneapolis police officers were working hard to do their daily job, and at the same time, they were put in the middle of these unfortunate situations,” he said. “Most of the protests we have seen are always peaceful. Let’s keep it that way.”

Frey also called out the president, saying, “Let’s not fight Donald Trump’s chaos with our own version of chaos here.”

Klobuchar said ICE’s work in Minnesota “goes far beyond” investigating fraud or apprehending violent criminals.

“I participated in that peaceful and powerful march yesterday, all those peaceful people, and we wake up in the morning with this,” lamented Klobuchar.

He also added that they opposed the bill of Congressional Republicans that tripled the ICE budget last summer, which he said is now more than the FBI, and said that the training of agents has been reduced from five months to 47 days.

“We also called for a full and transparent investigation,” Klobuchar said. “We’ve done this before in Minnesota, coordinating with local and state and state law enforcement. And if they’re not going to do it, then they need to get out of the way and let our professional Bureau of Criminal Apprehension conduct an investigation into this murder.”

Frey later added to the X post: “After today’s shooting, Minneapolis is filing a motion to compel an immediate decision on our temporary restraining order. We need immediate action to protect our city.”

DHS officials said Pretti approached Border Patrol agents while armed with a 9mm handgun and “resisting violence” when they tried to disarm him.
