Nearby Pets C200 2-Meal Automatic Pet Feeder for $50: This automatic feeder is very simple, which is both its weakness and its strength. It’s basically two shallow plastic containers lined with stainless steel (both dishwasher safe) and tamper-proof lids that lock and open automatically using an old-school egg-style timer that runs on AA batteries rather than electricity. Although the container has an ice pack to keep wet food cool, after one night it lost almost all of its coolness. There is an attached lid-link clip, a small piece of plastic that connects the lids to ensure they will open at the same time, which is very useful for two-cat owners like me. I wish the timer was electronic so I could program it for the exact time I want it to go on, rather than guessing the time on the little ticks. However, this is a simple solution to ensure that both my cats are fed wet food without having to wake up early in the morning.

Oneisall Cordless WiFi Automatic Cat Feeder for $50: I had high hopes for this wireless router that boasts a 100-day rechargeable battery and an integrated app, but it’s not very reliable. With the app, you can plan up to 10 daily meals (1-12 portions each), monitor your pet’s eating habits, and customize food calls. Unlike other apps, you can’t choose the portion size, but instead you have to multiply the number of servings. The app gave me constant problems, and would often disconnect from the server and not be able to reconnect to WiFi. Fortunately, I was able to program the food with the screen and buttons, but it would have been much better if the app had worked more reliably.

Catit Pixi Smart 6-Meal Feeder for $117: Like the others on this list, the Catit Pixi wet and dry feeder uses ice packs to keep wet food fresh and rotates the food through six chambers on a set schedule. The schedule can be programmed in the application or changed in the body of the server. At this price point, the app should not be limited and buggy. The schedule is only available during the military, and the application is very limited—you can only set the meal schedule for the same day, and when I wanted to make only two to three meals a day spread over two days, I had to reschedule meals for each new day. The feeder did not keep it cold enough to distribute the food and the wet food was not at a safe eating temperature. At this price point, just get the Petlibro Polar wet feeder for a few bucks more.
Catit Pixi Smart Cat Feeder for $114: Kibble is stored in the body of this dry feeder, but does not have a window to visually check feeding levels. The meal planning calendar only shows one week at a time, and although it should repeat daily based on the schedule, I found that some days there would be no schedule despite setting it up. The Pixi also doesn’t tell you how much food has been removed; it simply refers to it as a “portion”—I measured it myself and found a portion to be less than a spoonful of kibble. After using it continuously for more than a month, I found that it was very fancy and almost did not faithfully stick to the planned schedule, sometimes I skipped meals altogether. This feed can be dangerous, and I would caution pet parents against relying on it.
Nearby Pets C500 for $75: This automatic wet and dry feeder can program up to four pre-portioned meals (plus one hand-fed meal) that are activated on a timer system using three AA batteries (sold separately). The user presets four times that they want the bowls, with ice packs underneath, to turn. The bowls are deep and narrow and not very easy for cats to reach, which can cause beard fatigue. And although there are two large ice packs, when I checked the feeder after a night’s sleep, the packs were not very cold. This might be OK for kibble, but the wet food was kept at unsafe temperatures, and my cats didn’t have access to all the food.
Why Use an Automatic Feeder?
Automatic feeders are perfect for pet owners who want to help manage their pets’ weight and monitor eating patterns. Also, they allow more control and precision for owners to learn how much and when their cat eats. Because cats are naturally nocturnal, many have an annoying habit of waking them up in the morning and compulsively wanting to eat, and this allows you to plan a schedule that best fits their schedule without disrupting yours.
Of course, it is not recommended to leave your pets alone for long periods of time, but these automatic feeders provide more peace of mind and are much healthier for your pet than leaving a large amount of food for free feeding while you are away at night. Simply put, it’s an easy way to feed and monitor your cat’s health with little work for you, the human.
I have two rescue cats, ages 4 and 5, and they eat wet food twice a day and a small amount of dry kibble throughout the day. The vets (and the TikTokers) successfully persuaded me to move on to a liquid diet, however, with a higher water content. This provides more moisture to their food, which helps with potential complications such as UTIs, which are more common in male cats. I still like to give small amounts of dry food throughout the day to satisfy their appetite.
For dry food, I use Hill’s Science Diet, and for wet food I use a variety of Friskies’ Shreds. (Yes, only Shreds. Fellow cat owners will understand.)
Setting up the feed, I saw the ease of setup, potential problems, and app navigation. I also checked the various schedules and feeds manually with the app, noting any issues. I used each feeder for at least a week, if not longer.
How Long Can I Leave My Cat Alone?
Although cats are generally thought of as more caring than dogs, it’s still bad to leave your cat for long periods of time. Under severe conditions, you can leave the cat alone for 24 to 48 hours with regular feeding and a source of clean water, but it’s not ideal—especially for cats with health problems, cats under a year old, or very old cats. Although these feeders are automated, and meals can be planned ahead of time and over several days, pets still need their companions for development, care, and love.
