The President’s Chief of Staff

From joining an FBI search of an election center to suppressing a whistleblower complaint, Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, is undermining the independence of our intelligence community, says Times Opinion editor Kathleen Kingsbury.

It’s time to talk about Tulsi Gabbard. President Trump, reality TV star — “You’re fired. Get out of here.” — has brought together many actors in his second term. One of them, Tulsi Gabbard, is the director of national intelligence. Gabbard is destroying the credibility of our intelligence agencies in real time. Last week, Gabbard made an unusual move in Georgia, joining FBI agents as they searched the election center that President Trump criticized after his 2020 election loss. “We all know that President Trump is worried about losing Georgia and losing the 2020 election.” The next day, Gabbard called the president – “It was a rigged election. Everyone now knows they got it. Soon people will be prosecuted for what they did.” – and put him on speaker phone to speak directly to the agents who conducted the search – “That’s not how our system works.” which may jeopardize the independence of the entire investigation. “It politicizes an already very difficult situation.” We also learned that investigating the 2020 election has been a big part of Gabbard’s portfolio. Just what America needs our director of national intelligence to focus on. “He works hard and tries to keep the election safe.” This week there was much concern when the Wall Street Journal reported that an investigator filed a complaint against Gabbard last May. “Our client asked that this be taken to Capitol Hill. That’s the law. That’s what Tulsi Gabbard should have done.” We hear about it now, eight months later. That’s unusual. “The basic complaint is about the actions of the DNI.” And according to the investigator, it’s because Gabbard tried to bury the complaint. But this week, it finally went to Congress. On Wednesday, the complaint was presented to eight leaders in Congress who were briefed on the most sensitive intelligence information. “It took six months of bipartisan pressure.” Gabbard’s team said the whistleblower’s complaint was unfounded, but even so, the possibility that he dismissed it is not unheard of. Separately, Senator Ron Wyden sent a letter to the director of the CIA noting that he has serious concerns about the activities of the CIA. Now, one might be referring to the whistleblower complaint or Gabbard’s investigation into the United States and Puerto Rico elections – “What the hell is the DNI doing investigating Puerto Rican voting machines? – or the fact that last year, Gabbard fired a top attorney in the inspector general’s office and replaced one of his advisers, which violates the Democrats’ antitrust law. Gabbard and his colleagues throughout the administration Trump’s administration is running away from the independence of agencies that deal with sensitive, highly dangerous information and that is a serious threat to our democracy and our national security.
