Forgotten 90s Superhero Movie Is The Perfect Gift For Your Favorite Childhood Superhero

Although an adult I have seen that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers it was the gestalt of many existing pop culture ideas (especially Voltron), seemed like the revelation of a new way in my childhood. After all, what could be better than a couple of high school heroes kicking and taking names in their own creative ways before meeting a giant robot and putting the villain in his place? As it turns out, the only thing cooler than our first crop of heroes was the Green Ranger, and now you can stream it. Green for Evil (collecting the five-episode miniseries that introduced this mysterious character) for free on Tubi.
The foundation of Green for Evil that when a cool new kid (Tommy Oliver) with martial arts skills shows up, Rita Repulsa does the unthinkable: she turns him into the Green Ranger, making him her messenger of evil. He quickly proves himself more than equal to the task of defeating the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, using both the Sword of Darkness and his iconic Dragonzord. Still, the other Rangers see the good in him, and the story quickly turns into a race against the clock to save the Green Ranger’s soul before he destroys everything and every vigilante clings to him.
When Evil Turns Green
While there’s a lot to like here for anyone hoping for a heavy dose of ’90s nostalgia, Green for Evil will resonate especially well with long-time fans of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. For example, this is the only multi-episode story in the entire series, which helps give it a kind of beauty not found elsewhere in the show. This is also the first story to introduce the idea of new Rangers joining the team mid-season, something that would later become the basis of the original Power Rangers and dozens of fan-favorite spinoffs.
Speaking of fan favorites, it’s the most notable thing about it Green for Evil that introduces Jason David Frank, the Green Ranger, to the Power Rangers series. He quickly established himself as the bad boy of these pure heroes, giving him the cache needed to be the subject of many different stories. In this way, he became a kind of spokesman for the franchise, and continued in this position until his tragic death in 2022.
Have Zord, Will Travel
For me, I’m going back to the old days Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episodes (in simple movie format, no less) opened a nostalgia that had been dormant almost as long as Rita Repulsa herself. The game is truly the opposite of modern superhero media in almost every way: it’s bright instead of dull, heartfelt instead of funny, and gloriously self-contained instead of a cinematic universe. Broadcasting Green for Evil it made me feel like a kid again, and before the credits rolled, I found myself browsing eBay, hoping to buy the Dragonzord toy I’d dreamed of as a teenager.
Of course, the simplicity of Power Rangers it’s a double-edged sword: the story is good and straightforward, but that also means it doesn’t offer any real layers to fans hoping for anything deeper. You’re either engrossed in the show’s campy glitz (featuring dirty rubber-clad baddies and laugh-out-loud special effects) or you’re not, and if you don’t like endless “masks vs. monsters” fights, you might get bored quickly. Conversely, if these types of goofy action/comedy shenanigans are your jam, you probably will Green for Evil to be true a feast early 1990s amazing.
Looking Your Childhood Hero In The Eyes
After a day, I am old Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fandom quickly, so I didn’t check out the spinoffs, many of which were written by the late, great Jason David Frank (one of my childhood heroes). But this first show was a big part of my childhood, and I remember it all classes full of sweet kids who couldn’t wait to re-enact their favorite scenes on the playground. Revisiting Green for Evilit’s easy to see why everyone was so surprised: with its combination of monsters, mechs, and martial arts, Power Rangers everything anyone can want in a hero show.
