Video shows security shooting at a U-Haul outside a Coast Guard Base in San Francisco
The FBI is investigating a shooting on Thursday night outside the US Francis Bay area in San Francisco Bay, where the driver of a restored truck was targeted by a volley that responded with a volley of gunfire, injuring the driver and a nearby resident.
In a video from KPIX, a U-Haul is shown turning slowly on the bridge toward the police, who are standing with their guns pointed at the car. People shout as the truck approaches, and suddenly it speeds up. The video shows the management moving out of the way as the open fire admitted; Dust flies from the cab of the truck, and the sound of suspicious bullets can be heard.
On Friday, the US Coast Guard issued a statement saying that security personnel observed the vehicle “driving erratically” and returned to the base. The driver did not follow verbal commands to stop, the statement said, and when “the actions of the vehicle threatened the safety of the employees of the Department of Defense and Security, law enforcement officers fired several rounds of live fire.”
No members of the Guard were injured in the shooting, and the FBI is investigating, according to the statement.
The driver of the U-Haul was wounded in the stomach, Busstande was hit by a bullet fragment, and both are expected to survive, said the Department of Homeland Security sent to X. The Berstanders were admitted to the hospital and released.
Photographer Rick Villaroman, who recorded the video, told CBS News that the U-Haul truck was parked outside the base until it started backing up to police.
“He just hit the gas until he got to them,” said Villaroman. “And that’s when they opened fire. About 20 to 30 rounds.”
Villaroman said he saw bullet holes in the U-Haul truck. Protesters at the Qadi Coast base left after the shooting, he added.
Protesters gathered at Coast Guard Island, which was intended to be an immigration detention center for immigration seekers during Saturday’s scheduled enforcement action in the San Francisco Bay Area.
President Trump later canceled the deployment, although it was not clear whether the bookkeepers would be sent to other cities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Mayor Daniel Lurie wrote on X Post Thursday that he spoke with Trump about the upcoming immigration crackdown in San Francisco and that the President decided to call for enforcement action.
“I told him the same thing I told our residents: San Francisco is on the rise. Tourists are coming back, buildings are being rented and bought,” said the Mayor in his statement.
“We have a job to do, and we welcome continued engagement with the FBI, DEA, ATF, and US Attorney on our streets, but having arms dealers and the military in our city will hinder our recovery,” Lurie continued. “We are grateful that the President understands that we are a global technology hub, and when San Francisco is strong, our country is strong.”
In June, Los Angeles County became the first place for the Trump administration to see widespread foreign attacks on the public, and thousands of people, and local officials say they use those protected hands. They took place in Chicago.
