Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The new M5 Apple devices are the fastest and most powerful of all their devices, with new AI devices built right into the situation. However, it is also not a necessary development for the majority of people.
Already this year, I said the same thing about tablets, smartwatches, laptops, tablets and TVs. I’m tired of finding new ways to say this: We live in an age of Iterative development, where companies release new products faster than consumers can keep up. Along with the M5-Powered MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro, the Vision Pro is the epitome of iterative development, with the obligatory sprinkling of AI bells and whistles.
This is a trap apple has set for itself: the previous M-CECIP chips (M1, M2, M3, M4, and a few variants) are still so good that I’m not sure I don’t need the M5. In my house, tablets are more likely to be used for watching netflix or gaming The sims. I think I would struggle to push even the ancient M2 chip to its limits in everyday use. I also know professional video editors who still happily work on M1 and M2 MacMain Pros.
And that puts reviewers like me in the awkward position of simultaneously praising these products and telling you to stick with the Apple laptop or tablet you already have.
I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or a criticism of apple. I think it’s all two.
Bright light speed
Does that mean that these products are bad? Quite the opposite, actually. I believe they are some of the best gadgets in the history of the world, honestly. But do I buy them? Under the right circumstances, yes. But since the consumer itself is worried about inflation, rent, and health insurance, I’m sticking with my old laptop and tablet as long as possible. And my budget definitely doesn’t include the Vision Pro.
So, who are the new MacBook Pro and iPad Pro for iPad, exactly?

I can, too, rave about the new M5-Powered MacCook Pro (see also: My IPAD Pro review). And I recently had the opportunity to spend over an hour with the new Vision Pro, which completes the M5 Trifecta.
The iPad Pro in particular is really special, with a razor thin design and a crisp display. And yet, everything I love about it, I also loved the previous M4 model. Even liquid glass is available in the M4 models now, thanks to the iPados 26. Similarly, as the new MacBook is possible – and very surprising – and almost the model of last year. Ditto Vision Pro.
Of course, the name of these products gives away the game. These products are designed for professional users who use AI models in your environment, edit movies and podcasts, create social video, and use 3D rendering software. For filmmakers and social media creators who need a more detailed look for reference that they can take on the go, the iPad Pro can’t be overlooked. There is nothing else like it. But playing The sims? It’s like bringing a Ferrari to the track and field.
So, unless you’re willing to list a MacBook Pro or iPad Pro as an IPAD Pro as a business PROUNT, or unless it goes on a company card, I’m not sure you really need them.
The new M5 Macoot Pro also has another limitation. Currently, it is only available in a 14-inch version, and I know many film editors who will choose to work on a 16-inch laptop or IMAC or Mac studio instead. You may also be able to do better with the M3 Ultra or M4 max devices from Apple.
So, if the M5 MacMacook Pro or iPad Pro doesn’t work in your budget this year, don’t worry. You can just wait for next year’s m6 version.
