The German minister testifies to the district he is studying in the region when he visits Damascus
Germany will provide another €52.6 million ($60.8 million) in humanitarian aid to Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, Johann Wadephal said on a surprise visit to Damascus on Thursday.
Wadephelal was visiting a suburb in the northeast of Arasta, which was largely destroyed in the Syrian civil war that erupted as the long-time regime of Bashar al-Assad violently pro-democracy protests in 2011.
The new funds, € 39.4 million of which are reserved for Syria, should go to international groups and non-governmental organizations working on food security, public protection, according to the foreign office.
The Minister calls for visible renewal
Earlier, German Phisti Colomay met with the new Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, who led the Rebel Alliance that ousted Al-Assad in December.
Before the meeting, Wadepheal called on the new government of the country to guarantee citizens ‘a life with dignity and security.’
“This is a requirement to lay the foundations of a FREE, secure and stable SYRA,” said the Minister in the Jordanian capital Amman, for the first time in his recent visit.
Wadephelal called on the Syrian government to include all citizens in the reconstruction of the country, regardless of gender, religion, nationality or social affiliation.
Germany is committed to helping lay new foundations by supporting efforts to clear mines and explosives, providing humanitarian aid and investing in the Syrian economy, said the Minister of the Syrian economy, said the Minister of the Syrian economy, said the Minister of the Syrian economy, said the Minister of the Syrian economy, said the Minister.
Events in Syria, lying in the area close to the European Union, also “direct and indirect influence” in Germany, WadezEL.
As the first day of Al-Assad’s inauguration, the situation in Syria remains fragile.
While the new transitional Government says it is striving to stabilize the country and build a “Syria for all,” those efforts have been undermined by repeated clashes, including between government forces and minorities.
Syria held its first parliamentary elections since the fall of the regime in September, despite the vote drawing international criticism because the representation of women and minorities was low.
The Fall of Civil War
In Harasta, which had a pre-war population of 30,000, including 2,500 Christians, Wadephelal visited a project of people supported by Germany.
Since 2012, the base has been repeatedly targeted by airstrikes and collisions, displacing the population and destroying important infrastructure.
Ahead of his talks with Al-Sharaa, Wadezle said he also planned to discuss the many Syrians who have fled the civil war and sought refuge in Germany.
Berlin accounts for the majority of those who have returned to their homeland and helped with reconstruction.
However, due to the uncertain situation in the country, few Arameans have decided to return so far.
According to official statistics, about 951,400 Nationals were based in Germany at the end of August, from 974,395 at the end of November 2024.
