Double jail sentence for stabbing a pregnant girlfriend

A man who killed his pregnant girlfriend while on probation has been jailed for life at the age of 42.

Alana Odysseos, 32, grew up in Suffolk and was about eight weeks pregnant when she died outside her flat in Walthamstow, east London, after being stabbed 19 times with a knife on 22 July 2024.

Shaine Mashi, 47, Of Surrey Quays, South-East London, initially admitted manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility and pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Sentencing March earlier in the Old Bailey, Judge Mr Justice Murray said it was possible he could be released “given his age” and the length of the sentence.

“I’m sure you intend to kill him,” Mr. Justice Murray told March, who appeared via video link from HMP Belmarsh, that he had refused to attend a personal hearing.

The court heard Msdysseos had been in an abusive relationship in March four months before she was killed, with neighbors hearing constant arguments but no outward signs of violence.

The probation service in London had arranged for security checks to be carried out, but when the march told them the relationship between him and Ms. Dysseos had ended further.

March was 21 when he stabbed Andrely Drummond, 17, in the neck and was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison in July 2000.

He was released in early 2013 and recalled to prison later that year after being convicted of assaulting his then-pregnant girlfriend and released in February 2018.

Jasmine Yates, sister of MS ODYSEOS’, told the court that she saw her sister’s mental health and encouraged her to go on the march when she left all her male contacts from her phone.

MS Yates added that when Mashi promised that Nksy Odysseos would go to therapy and change, she also left notes for her sister to tell her to have an abortion.

Ms Odysseos told a friend she was scared after March hit her in the face with glass, the court heard.

In a victim impact statement, Ms Yates said she told her sister: “If he rides you, he can kill you. I’m worried about those words and what’s going on behind the scenes.”

Karen Cronin, mother of MS ODENSSEOS, told the court: “I used to go to church and sing in the choir, but the anger I feel [March] It didn’t feel Christian so I didn’t go to church anymore.

“I want him to die in prison with no hope of doing this to anyone else.”

During the trial, the court was shown CCTV footage of March walking away from Ms. Odysseos’ flat after the attack and throwing away evidence including phones including phones and clothes.

Police recovered March’s phone from the flooded area and found a voice note recorded after 03:00 BST that said: “Mum I just killed a woman and I’m going back to jail.”

CCTV and police bodycam footage from his arrest in March show him admitting to murdering and stabbing Ms Odysseos.

He also referred to her as a “scarf” who deserved to be put in jail.

While Mashi was in custody at Benkon police station in London, he said: “I stabbed him repeatedly with a knife in the long kitchen.

“I think the last stab was in the back of his bear, maybe lighting up his heart.”

Forensic pathologist Dr Math Cieka told the court that the post-shorsem scandal revealed that Ms Odysseos was stabbed in the heart from behind.

He also added that this attack had “great power” that the five stab wounds that killed him would have killed him by themselves.
