There’s a reason the MX Master 4 sits at the top of our list. The sleek, ergonomic design almost feels like a hand rest that puts four customizable buttons and a second scroll wheel within easy reach of your thumb. Every button is adjusted with Logitech + Software options, which is the Treasure Trease of Production power.
Besides the usual customization options like cll-speed and redirection, you can assign all kinds of shortcuts and create profiles for specific applications – so that the buttons do different things depending on the application you’re using at the time. “Smart Actions” take things up a notch, allowing you to bring up an application, perform a series of keystrokes, change the body and restart or shut down your PC. We’re fully in the AI era, so there’s a way to call chatgpt and other chatbots here, too. Closing a zoom meeting, changing your volume and summarizing your notes in a group email with one click? With MX Master 4 you can.
Apart from all that, this latest model includes a modicum of haptic feedback through the panel on its thumb rest. When you start writing down the mouse on your PC or, directly to an image in Photoshop, you will hear a gentle buzz. You’ll also hear when you use the new Ring, which pops up when you click on the panel and reveals a variety of customized shortcuts based on the app you’re using. Yes, this is all kind of a gimmick, but the haptles provide a subtle sense of certainty in certain activities, while the ring ring can save you a few seconds here and there when you choose to lean on it.
The device itself now comes with a well-designed plastic finish, which is smooth without feeling slippery and should be more durable than the materials used by previous models. Both steering wheels are made of high-quality aluminum, and the front can easily switch between a notched roll and free-spin on the fly. The battery is limited to 70 days of use between charges, which held true in our testing. Even if you’re caught short, a minute or two of charging time will get you through your work day. The main click buttons, meanwhile, are quieter than a physical mouse. Multi-device communication is not common, but with MX Master 4 You can also work seamlessly between two PCs at the same time. It detects when you reach the edge of the screen in one before switching to another – it will even let you copy and paste files between them.
The whole thing is sturdy and comfortable but, at 150 grams, there’s no time to rest – so be warned if your hands are on the side. There is also sadly no choice on the left. 8K DPI (dots per inch) is responsive enough for everyday use, although the polling rate remains at a base of 125hz, so it’s not as buttery smooth as other gaming mice. It would be nice if the mouse came with storage onboard instead of forcing you to keep the app’s + options open to use haptic feedback and other features. Still, for power users or anyone who spends all day at their desk, the MX Master 4 is both a pleasure to hold and an impressive feat of performance. – Jeff Dunn contributed to this virus
