Scientists are sounding the alarm: This upcoming North American flu season could be a real treat, due to the rapid arrival of variants that don’t fit well with the seasonal flu vaccine.
Canadian health authorities issued the warning in a paper late last month. An unexpected variant of the H3N2 flu, subclade k, emerged quickly during the tail end of the flu season in the Southern Hemisphere this year, they noted. Subclade K is now poised to become another strain of the flu season in the US and Canada, and our vaccines are likely to work well this winter against flu.
“While latent vaccination may still protect against various circulating diseases, improved surveillance is needed,” the researchers wrote in their paper, published in Journal of the medical microbiology and infectious disease association of Canada.
A bad hit
During the peak of the flu season, many different strains of influenza A and influenza B viruses will proliferate among people. Because it takes about nine months to combine enough vaccines for everyone in a given hemisphere, as well as the northern part) to predict which flu outbreaks you can cover. Why goals are important
Despite the sad idea, vaccines remain one of the most important tools against the flu this season. So it’s still worth getting a flu shot as soon as possible.
