Adebayo’s 83 points

TThe National Basketball Association (NBA) is so full of athletic specimens that the spectacular performance is over. However, one day the fans were overwhelmed by such a high number that it was surprising that they quickly entered the legends of this league. As the crowd at the Kaseya Center roared and the scoreboard slowly ticked up, Bam Adebayo delivered the stat line even his most ardent supporters thought possible. Known more for defense, versatility, and leadership than pyrotechnics, he managed to record 83 points.

For a generation, the scoring streak seemed solid: Wilt Chamberlain’s century in the conference and Kobe Bryant’s unforgettable 81 in 2006 centered beneath it. Adebayo’s explosion reorganized the order in one notable outing, courtesy of a box office record-setting 36 made free throws from 43 attempts. Needless to say, the show also rewrote the record book for the Heat, surpassing the franchise mark of 61 previously set by LeBron James. To argue that the leap was surreal for a player whose previous career high was just 41 would be a blatant understatement.

Interestingly, the competition continued like the beat of a steadily growing drum. Adebayo scored 31 points in the first quarter alone and had 43 at the half. And with 62 at the end of the third period, his purpose became clear. There was no denying that the Heat were going to win, especially with the tanking Wizards on tap. The question, however, is whether he will surpass Bryant’s total. Unsurprisingly, his teammates (and even head coach Erik Spoelstra) tried to respond positively. He gave it his all, and ultimately found success through a little game-changing effort and a relentless display at the free throw line.

Naturally, the success did not escape the NBA’s modern tendency to provoke instant debate. Just as many observers have rushed to declare the impossibility of the act as it has been scrutinized with a critical eye. Was it organic? Was it fired? Should the Heat continue to feed Adebayo as the points pile up? The questions arose in a dynamic and even triumphal way, and the conventional wisdom was successfully presented with a choice: celebrate the moment or examine it.

To be sure, history tends to settle such disputes in a simplistic and unsympathetic way. The numbers endure long after the test ends. In the upcoming lists of the NBA’s greatest point-producing mirrors, the order will now read: Chamberlain, Adebayo, Bryant. And there’s no discounting how he’s placed himself among two of the sport’s most prolific goalscorers. With one bad night in Miami, the improbable became permanent, and the league’s annals found another unexpected, unforgettable chapter.
