Some of the best movies are the ones that will catch you off guard, that you don’t expect to like or that involve you after the credits roll. “Hamnet” is one of them.

Adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name, “Hamnet” tells the story of William Shakespeare’s only begotten son, Hamnet, told from the perspective of his wife Anne Hathaway – referring to Agnes.

Jessie Buckley stars as Agnes, a rebellious farm girl who sparks love for Will (Paul Mescal), an aspiring playwright and poet. An unplanned pregnancy leads to them tying the knot and going on to have three children: Susanna is followed by twins Hamnet and Judith.

While Agnes is raising the children in the countryside, she will travel back to London in the hope of pleading for her job while Agnes raises the children in the countryside. Unfortunately, when he is away from this tragedy strikes the Shakespeare family as this disease claims the life of 11-year-old Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe). His absence at a time of family crisis puts a strain on his fragile marriage.

Buckley has yet to become a marquee name – although his immense talent allows for that. He has always been a lover of Indie films, delivering one performance after another (“wild rose,” “I’m thinking of ending things,” “lost daughter,” and “women speak,” just like the villains. Agnes’ dynamic portrayal of him made him an Oscar contender, taking the audience on a roller coaster from imagination to pure fulfillment.

Jessie Buckley stars as Agnes and Joe Alwyn as Bartholomew in Director Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet,” a feature-length release.

Mescal, a rising star alone – he is best known for the well-known “Gladiator II” – continues to find his place where there are leading men of the generation who play the famous writer, facing the tragedy called “Hamlet.”

While there is strong use from Buckley and Mescal, it is twelve-year-old Jacobi Jupe who really emphasizes as the spiritually wise hamnet, showing an innocence and a heartbeat not often seen in children’s sellers. Expect him to have a long career ahead.

If “hamnet” is an orchestra, then Chloé Zhao is its conductor, admirably preserving a thin song between the terrible performances, his piercing screenplay and the rich cinematography of Lukasz Zal.

Zhao, writer/director of 2021 Best Photo Winner “Nomadland,” passed by here. It’s no surprise that Steven Spielberg and Sam Strieven signed on as producers.
