Canada imposes sanctions on 4 more Iranian officials – National

The federal government is imposing additional sanctions on four senior Iranian government officials, Foreign Minister Anita Anand said in a statement.
The most recent round of sanctions was introduced under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations.
“These people, all high-ranking Iranian officials, have been involved in horrific human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran), and have played a major role in aiding and abetting repressive policies,” Anand said in a statement.
The four Iranian officials are:
- Mohsen Karimi
- Ahmad Kadem Seyedoshohada
- Mustafa Mohebbi
- Hassan Akharian
Canada has now imposed 18 rounds of sanctions starting in October 2022 against Iranian officials and organizations for alleged human rights violations.

This brings the total number of Iranian individuals sanctioned by Canada to 210 and the number of sanctioned Iranian entities to 254.
“Iran continues to fight demonstrations and protests that violate international human rights obligations. The security forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have used heavy and lethal force to suppress the protests, denying the rights of Iranians to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and assembly, among others,” said Anand.

In 2012, Canada designated Iran as a “state sponsor of terrorism under the State Immunity Act.”
This designation, in conjunction with the Victims of Terrorism Justice Act, allows victims to bring civil actions against Iran for loss or damage “resulting from a terrorist act connected to Iran and committed anywhere in the world.”
