Ashley Farquharson raced to Olympic glory on Tuesday at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
The American luger was moved when he checked the scoreboard and saw that he had won his first Olympic medal. Her performance in the women’s luge singles on Tuesday also marked the second time an American has won an Olympic medal in the event.
Farquharson, who started skating as an after-school activity growing up in the middle Park City, Utah, said it is almost hard to believe what he has accomplished.

Julia Taubitz of Germany took the gold medal, winning by almost a full second, a monster margin in luge. Elena Bota of Latvia was second, matching her country’s best Olympic result.
Until Farquharson’s feat, Erin Hamlin was the last American to earn a bronze medal, doing so at the 2014 Sochi Games.

“This was a dream come true,” Taubitz said. “Now the dream is coming true.”
Farquharson didn’t win a medal in any of his first 54 World Cup races before ending the season.
He wasn’t the fastest, but he was good enough. He is an Olympic medalist. Farquharson’s ability will never be questioned again.
“She’s really excited for Ashley, she’s really excited for USA Luge,” said longtime US teammate Emily Fischnaller. “I mean, we’re the ones on the sled, but there’s a team behind us with everything we do. So, that’s a testament to all the work everyone’s put into it.”
