This term, called “Latin-X,” has been floated in recent times by students, activists, and entertainers as an alternative to the more nuanced terms “Latino” and “Latina,” but it has failed to catch on.
Pulido said that while some in New York City and California may use the term to describe Latinos, “people down here don’t talk that way.”
Host Audie Cornish noted that during the 2024 election, another issue brought to the fore was the “backlash in progressive policy language,” and specifically, in the Latino community, in the debate surrounding the term “Latinx.”

Cornish then played a video clip of Ocasio-Cortez chastising politicians, including Democrats, who say they promote the use of the term as “bad for the party.” The host noted that many lawmakers have come out and said they will not use the name, and asked Pulido where he stood on the issue.
“Well, I mean I don’t talk like that. And people down here don’t talk like that, and there’s nothing offensive about it,” he replies. “But let’s be honest, you know, New York is the East Coast…. And maybe those places, they talk like that, but not down here.”
“Nobody in the average day-to-day life talks like that. That’s just the truth,” Pulido said.

“I think a lot of people feel like there’s a lot of change going on [with] language. And, you know, a lot of issues too, like oil and gas. My state is pretty much all oil and gas, and these are the jobs that in many cases in these rural areas are the highest paying jobs for people. And then, you know, I think you should have a candidate who represents the district. And my state is very different than New York, which is very different,” Pulido argued.
Closing his thoughts on the matter, Pulido said that while he would not tell Ocasio-Cortez how to represent his district, his district is very different, “and that difference should be respected.

According to the Pew Center’s 2024 Pew Center survey, only 47% of Latino respondents know the term “Latinx.” That number nearly doubled from 2019, when just 23% of Latino and Hispanic Poll participants recognized the name.
Only a small fraction of those surveyed (4%) actually used the term “Latinx” to describe themselves, according to Pews.
That number hasn’t changed much since 2019, when 3% said they identified as “Latinx.” The Pew Research Center found in their survey of Latinos that 75% strongly disagree that “Latinx” should not be used at all.
