Cameron Mathison opens up about her health journey, and what “saved” her.

In an interview with Fox News Digital at the 33rd Movieguide Awards, the 56-year-old actor encouraged others to “pay attention to their bodies” when it comes to “grinding” and “strength,” adding that it “definitely saved my life.”

“Don’t be a hypochondriac and start thinking that everyone has cancer, but I was really diligent about checking and paying attention to my body, and it saved my life. It definitely saved my life,” he said. “So that’s my main take on this: you get a little pain in your gut, you don’t suddenly think you have cancer. But over time, if you do tests and blood work and different things and things are off over time, like, get an MRI, check it out.”

The actor was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer, in 2019. In an Instagram post shared Tuesday, the actress announced that a recent scan showed she is officially six years cancer-free, noting that “my kidney function is actually even better” and “better than last year.”

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Mathison explained that being diagnosed with cancer changed the way she looked at her life, saying, “I thought I was healthy, but I wasn’t.”

“I learned things about my body and my genetics,” he explained. “Things like, I’m not detoxing very well. There are certain things that I have to be really aware of, so it’s driven me to go deeper, deeper, deeper with my life.”

According to the Patient Resource website, Mathison was diagnosed with cancer after undergoing an MRI following years of digestive problems.

An MRI eventually found a tumor in her kidney, but it “doesn’t appear to have spread anywhere” and it wasn’t in her lymph nodes. He then underwent surgery to remove the tumor and 20 percent of his kidney.

“Not everyone who feels depressed needs an MRI, but no one knows your body like you do. Pay attention, and follow up. If you are burping or your stomach is distended, your body is trying to tell you something. See your doctor. Get a second opinion,” he said on the site.

Mathison is known for her work on “All My Children” and “General Hospital.” He went on to become one of the most recognizable leading men on the Hallmark Channel and is now a recognizable face in many American Family movies.

While at the Movieguide Awards, she told Fox News Digital what it means to her to be able to act in these films, and to “spread beauty and hope in the world,” adding that she wishes her faith had “influenced my career decisions more” in her past.

“They influence my career decisions a lot now – the decisions I make now. But I’ve been at it for 30 years, and I’ve made bad decisions,” he said. “So now, to be able to be here and host a show tonight – and this is the fourth or fifth time – and make these films and spread goodness and hope in the world, I’m so grateful.”
