Some Democrats worry that the slogan “end ICE” will have as bad a reputation as a liberal slogan like “bringing back the police,” The New York Times reported Thursday.
According to the Times, “some Democrats worry that calls to abolish the agency are an unwelcome distraction from common sense. They fear that the slogan ‘End ICE’ will age as badly as ‘Defund the Police’.”

“Obviously ICE is a total problem — it’s out of control, it’s moving too fast,” Gallego told the Times.
“The last thing we need to do, again, is to make the same mistake when it comes to the ‘Defund the Police’ rhetoric. That ended up not really helping to communicate what the people wanted. The people want a smaller ICE that’s really focused on security.”
Calls for police defunding from far-left figures became more popular among Democrats in 2020, after George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer. However, this term did not take part in the public and seriously damaged the Democratic Alliance party in the elections of that year, and many leaders of this party want to distance themselves from the slogan that seems to the critics to be a wake-up call.
“But some Democrats warn that calling for an end to ICE is a trap that will only help Republicans,” the New York Times reported.

“The pressure is emotional,” their memo read. “The slogan is simple. But politically, it’s deadly. Every call to end ICE risks squandering one of the clearest opportunities in years for meaningful immigration enforcement reform — while giving Republicans the fight they want.”

An ICE agent shot and killed him Renee Good, 37, last week during a law enforcement operation in south Minneapolis. Government officials said the agents were trying to arrest the woman when the woman tried to use her car as a weapon, leading the ICE officer to shoot in self-defense.

Top Democrats, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walzcriticized the state’s account of the incident and rejected a claim that the officer acted in self-defense. Minnesota has since sued the Trump administration, saying the state’s immigration crackdown is “unlawful” and “unprecedented.”
