Newly released FBI records linked to the Covenant School shooting in Nashville include documents made by shooter Audrey Elizabeth Hale that shed more light on her motivations, planning and personal finances.
The FBI released more than 100 pages of Hale’s documents following the trial, including journal entries believed to date back to late 2021, handwritten notes detailing preparations for the school shooting and references to the weapons Hale intended to acquire.
Some of the texts list “Christian school (a hateful religion)” as a reason to identify the Covenant School.

Hale, 28, attacked the Christian elementary school he attended on March 27, 2023, killing six people before he was shot in response by Metro Nashville Police Department officers.
The deceased were identified as school employees Katherine Koonce, 60; Cynthia Peak, age 61; and Mike Hill, 61; and students Hallie Scruggs, Evelyn Dieckhaus and William Kinney, all 9.
Footage captured by police following the attack showed Hale walking past the school armed with multiple guns.
Authorities said Hale entered the building through a side entrance and walked through several areas of the school before being confronted by police.

Shortly before the shooting, Hale texted a friend describing the planned attack as “suicidal intent” and saying the friend would likely “hear about me in the news after I’m dead,” according to summaries released by officials.
Among the newly released FBI materials is a handwritten page seen by Fox News Digital titled “Account Savings Record,” and a joint student financial aid document.
In the entry, Hale wrote “FAFSA [sic] grant checks starting at $2,050.86,” followed by notebook-style notes documenting payments from Nossi College of Art and Design in Nashville, where Hale was enrolled at the time.

The Tennessee Star also reported that those records may support statements Hale’s parents made to Metro Nashville Police Department detectives shortly after the incident.
Hale’s parents reportedly told investigators in 2023 that their child used Pell Grant money to buy the guns used in the attack.

Hale’s mother reportedly told police that because Hale was over 25 and enrolled as a student, the parents’ income no longer factored into eligibility for financial aid, making Hale eligible for subsidies even though he was unemployed.
Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake previously confirmed that investigators found a manifesto and hand-drawn maps in Hale’s car after the incident.
