The museum, which is closed every Monday, has no visitors who were there when its door was forced to find that the gold and silver coins were broken, a senior local official, Pierrick White Wendawao, told BFMTV on Wednesday.

White said “not all the gold and silver coins” in the museum were stolen.

“The Gendarmerie, accompanied by our museum teams, are currently actively looking into things,” White said. “The people of Langres as a whole are being robbed by the most ruthless people. It’s like the town’s family treasures have been stolen.”

The stolen coins – about 2,000 of them – were worth around €90,000 (C$147,000), the BBC reports.
