General Hospital Star Anthony Geary Dies – Heartbreaking Cause Of Death Revealed & Heartfelt Tributes From General Hospital Co-Stars!

General Hospital fans are mourning the loss of soap actor and legend Anthony Geary. He passed away tragically and unexpectedly. We have the latest on Luke Spencer’s death and the reaction to the tragedy.
General Hospital The Tragic Loss of Tony Geary
Soap fans from around the world were shocked by the sudden, tragic, and unexpected death of Tony Geary. He was 78 years old. He died on Sunday, December 14, three days after the operation. So although they haven’t announced the official cause of death of actor Luke Spencer, word has come out that there were problems in the project.
In case you didn’t know, Anthony Geary moved to the Netherlands full time after retirement General Hospital in 2015, this is where he died. So, it’s been ten years since we had Luke Spencer GH. Two years after he officially left the ABC soap and said he would not return, he returned. He came back.
Tony Geary returned in 2017, and that was for one episode when Jane Elliot retired, and he returned as Tracy Quartermaine’s (Jane Elliot) soul mate, Luke. It was a small comeback. He didn’t even have a line of dialogue. It was just something like a tribute to Jane Elliot.
Behind the Scenes Drama: Social Conflict and Lasting Friendships
There were hard feelings about Tony Geary’s departure, if you don’t remember, for one person in particular. At the time, Ron Carlivati was the head writer of the General Hospital. He went on to become a major writer in the Days and now, I think, he is the author of the breakdown at Beyond the Gates. He and Tony didn’t get along, and Ron even took a swipe at Tony at the Daytime Emmy acceptance speech.
By the time Ron won that award, he was already gone because it’s like a year’s worth of shows and what’s written at the Emmys. So, he went up on stage with the people he no longer worked with to accept the reward and decided to burn bridges and called Tony a “writer.”
Ron Lashes Out on Tony Geary
Ron said Tony complimented his writing and pretended he didn’t really know him. His feud with Ron was a rare public display of hatred. Usually, they keep what’s behind the scenes hidden. But Sonny Corinthos’ actor Maurice Benard shared the same sentiment and said that the writer, known as Ron, was not his fan, and Maurice seems happy that Ron is gone.
Claudio Gama Reacts to Heartbreaking Loss
But apart from that boy, Anthony Geary was much loved by his co-stars and fans. After he left General Hospital In 2015, Tony moved to the Netherlands full time, and married her husband, Claudio Gama, in 2019. They were together, however, since the 90s. Tony’s husband said of her sudden death, “It was a shock to our families and friends.” Claudio said “Tony has been my friend, my friend, my husband for more than 30 years.”
And apparently, this was really unexpected for them. Claudio posted a video of him walking at night in Amsterdam on Saturday, the day before his husband’s death, and said that Tony was not there but was expected to return home on Monday. Apparently, Claudio was keeping it a secret that Tony was in the hospital and underwent surgery. And then, instead of returning home to her husband, Tony suddenly died.
The Making of a General Hospital Myth: Luke Spencer and the Luke & Laura Phenomenon
If you’re a long-time watcher, you’ll know that Tony Geary originated the role of Luke Spencer in General Hospital back in 1978 after he did a few more small roles, one The Young and the Restless. And in 1981, Luke and Laura Spencer (Genie Francis) were a cultural phenomenon.
31 million people watched the wedding. I was one of them. And I remember watching it. I was a small child, but my older sister was addicted General Hospital and especially to Luke and Laura. So, Tony Geary is part of my childhood memories.
And mostly my earliest memories of watching any soap. His romance with Laura, I remember at the time, was epic. For whatever reason, what sticks in my head are their scenes on Cassadine Island together where she washes her hair with some kind of ferns, like making soap.
And they were in this harbor thing, and it was very energetic and they were making love. And then, the wedding itself and Elizabeth Taylor came, starting the role of Helena Cassadine (later Constance Towers) in the wedding.
The early years of Anthony Geary
Tony Geary was born in Utah in 1947. And this is kind of interesting. His birth name was Tony, but he later officially changed it to Anthony, but then went with Tony to his friends. And he was the only Anthony in the credits of his games. So it was kind of interesting. He said he had a happy childhood and at school he was alone in art and said he was “not of this world.”
Gloria Monty, a legend, hired Tony Geary in 1978 for a 13-week arc. At that time he hired him, General Hospital was actually facing cancellation, but Gloria was able to turn it around. And of course, the ABC soap is still going strong. They have received multiple Emmy Awards in the daytime category, and the Tony actually holds the record for most wins for an actor.
Honored Legacy: Emmy Wins and Official Recommendations
GH runner Frank Valentini issued a statement. He said, “Everything General Hospital the family is sad.” He said, “Tony was a good player and he set the standard that we always strive for.” And he said, “Tony and Luke Spencer’s legacy will live on for generations to come. GH members to follow in his footsteps.” And of course, Frank sent his condolences to Tony’s husband, Claudio.
ABC has also released its official statement that Tony Geary as Luke Spencer helped explain General Hospital and daytime television. The press release also stated that Anthony took the audience for ten years and said that Luke and Laura’s wedding was a milestone that is part of television history. And that is absolutely true.
I’ve said this before, but Tony won eight Daytime Emmys. He holds the record for winning the actor. He actually set a record in 2008 when he won six and then went on to snag two more Emmys in 2012 and 2015, the same year he retired and left the role of Luke Spencer.
Heartfelt Tributes: Co-Stars Remember Anthony Geary’s Kindness and Talent
Tony’s main scene partner is there most of the time General Hospital by Genie Francis, who still plays Laura Spencer on the ABC soap. He said he had a dream. She woke up on Sunday, the day she passed away, dreamed of death and ran to her husband. Then he found out that Tony was gone and said he knew what the dream was about. He said, “There is no star that burns hotter than Tony.” And Genie said he was kind, full of love as an artist, and funny. He said, “Working with Tony was always fun because you never knew what could happen.
Jacob Young, who briefly played the role of Lucky Spencer, said, “I am speechless at the passing of my mentor, on-screen father, and dear friend Anthony Geary. He cared deeply about his fellow actors.” Jacob said even after he left GH, he and Tony stayed close. And that’s a very common thread with many of his former colleagues.
John Stamos Pays a Touching Gift
John Stamos, who played Blackie Parish back in the day General Hospitalhe said he was only 19 years old when he got on the soap, and it was his first acting job. And John said Tony couldn’t have been kinder or more welcoming. John said that he was surprised by Tony’s acting and that he would stay when he finished his day’s work and watch Tony’s scenes because he learned a lot about acting just by watching him.
John said Tony always listened, and lifted up those around him. One of his scene partners was Emma Samms in Luke and Holly Sutton’s big love moment, which I loved too, I’ll admit. Emma said her heart is broken by Tony’s passing. Sarah Joy Brown, who played the role of Carly Corinthos back in the day, Luke’s niece, said Tony was one of her biggest fans when she first came to the show.
He said you gave him the courage to play outside the box. Sarah said she enjoyed every minute of working with him. Brandon Barash, who played Johnny Zacchara, remained close to Tony years after they both left General Hospital, and Brandon went to the Netherlands to see him and considered him an ongoing, very strong friendship. Brandon said, “A piece of my heart broke today.”
Other General Hospital a star we haven’t heard of, but I’m sure you’ll talk about, was Kelly Monaco, aka Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco). He’s gone GH a year now, but he was in the Netherlands last year visiting his former star and dear friend. He was an enduring legend. He was an icon. Rest in peace, Tony Geary. He will be missed by everyone.
