White House economic director Kevin Hassett said Sunday that the Trump administration is taking an approach to tackling the housing affordability crisis.

He said the administration is preparing a comprehensive proposal aimed at easing the burden on home buyers, details of which are expected early in the new year.

“We’re going to have a plan, a big plan, to announce soon in the new year that will be great news for Americans who feel like they can’t afford to buy a home anymore,” Hassett added.

He also said that Cabinet officials are planning to meet with the President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in the days following Christmas to continue reviewing policy proposals.

“We have a large list of housing ideas that have been carefully examined by Cabinet secretaries to present to the president in a week or two and we will see which one he chooses,” he added.

The administration’s push comes as housing affordability has become a political issue for Trump and a winning issue for Democrats.

Voters largely blame Trump for the recession, almost as many blame him for the current economy as Biden, and many say his policies have hurt them.

At the same time, approval of Trump’s economic handling has fallen to record lows, and opposition to his performance has risen to record highs, even among some of his key supporters.

Meanwhile, Democrats leaned heavily on the themes of accessibility in state and local elections this fall and it paid off.

In places like Virginia, New York and New Jersey, where voter suppression is high housing costs and utility bills, Democratic candidates seized on Trump’s early economic measures, including his trade policy, to argue that his policies were exacerbating the problem of unaffordability rather than reducing it.

They promised to reduce energy costs, increase affordable housing and protect middle-class wages. The message struck a chord with voters and points to a broader truth: when many feel financially challenged, the party that speaks most clearly about pocketbook concerns tends to win.

While Hassett declined to elaborate on the proposals, executives have discussed reducing design restrictions and expanding long-term inventory products.

Trump’s challenge will be translating those ideas into relief for voters who have been questioning whether his promises of affordability are being fulfilled.
