‘I can’t ask more of the players’

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone suffered a heavy defeat after Bodo/Glimt produced a stunning 2-1 victory at the Metropolitano. The defeat was the second chance lost for Los Colchoneros to reach the top eight of the Champions League, and as a result they entered the play-off round.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first half, Bodo/Glimt turned things around before the hour mark, and Atletico couldn’t come back. Towards the end of the game, the crowd started to whistle, and the players faced the same situation after the final whistle. It was the first time Atletico had lost at the Metropolitano in 10 months.

“The fans always have the option to express themselves in the way they feel, and we, too, have worked to bring good to the club,” Simeone told MD after the match.

‘I won’t ask anything else from the players’ – Simeone

Despite the disappointment, Simeone continued to defend his players from criticism. He insisted that more accurate finishing would turn things around for his side.

“We gave everything. I can’t think of anything else I can ask from the players; they work hard, they compete. We weren’t clinical enough in the third final, but those opportunities will come.”

“The solution is to continue to create opportunities, encourage the team, so that we can give everything, there is no other way, the way we are going is good, we need to keep it and strengthen it in the future, because important things are coming.”

The feeling doubled down when asked about the level of embarrassment.

“To be honest, I’m very disappointed with the Galatasaray game; we deserved to win more. Not today, however. We played three days ago, and the team gave everything. I can’t blame my team for anything; they gave everything. With this humility and confidence in what we’re doing, the results we want will come.”

One of the biggest topics of discussion at Atletico is the lack of resources that Simeone is working with, going back and forth with Sporting Director Mateu Alemany in the media. Giuliano Simeone was sitting on the bench, but although the situation was not sent – he was ill and it was not considered well that he could do that. Simeone was again asked about reinforcements.

“We are working on what we can bring, hopefully these days, there aren’t many days left, something will happen… Or not.”

Less than 12 hours later, news broke that Atletico had made a bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka. The midfielder is reportedly the one to sign before the end of the window.
