Joan Laporta has confirmed that Barcelona will be in the mood for a big signing this summer, amid ongoing doubts over their finances. As the presidential election at the Camp Nou approaches, he also confirmed that voting for rival Victor Font could put Hansi Flick’s position in question.
Font said he would remove the Director of Football Deco if he was appointed, a move Laporta criticized. Asked about Monday night’s election, Flick defended Deco, confirming that he is working well with the former midfielder. Speaking with Cadena Cope later that evening, Laporta reiterated the idea that Flick’s continuation depends on him, perhaps his strongest argument in the election.
“I’m not one for warning. Flick has already spoken. He is happy and satisfied with working at Barca, Barcelona, and people in the writing room. Victor Font says he will finish Deco, and working with Flick is very good. He said he will not be free. We have done everything to do this job.”

“Victor Font has become the main threat to Barca. He is useless; he wants to get rid of Deco and put in three people who will do one job. I will keep my opinion about them. It is an insult to say that they are at Deco’s level. He is a danger to a working sports project.”
Laporta with the dismissal of Xavi Hernandez
The latter president continued to question the Barcelona Font project. The latter has confirmed that he will clean up the club’s finances as his main selling point.
“I don’t see anything new in Victor Font’s proposal. I don’t see anything new or change. What will change? The stadium? The future? It is the stadium, La Masia, that continues to develop the players. We are already riding the future. We are the ones who built this.”
One of the most surprising situations on Sunday night was Xavi Hernandez announcing that Laporta had interfered with Lionel Messi’s return in 2023. He also accused mentor Alejandro Echevarria of engineering his dismissal, and Flick had the following to say about how the decision was made.
“Deco told me that Xavi is asking for radical changes in the team. I spoke to Flick in 2021; we already had it in mind. He had reached an agreement with the German national team. When Xavi said, after the defeat to Villarreal, that he would leave at the end of the season, Flick started looking at Barca.”
Laporta confirms Barcelona can make big signings this summer
In the past three summer transfer windows, Laporta has said that Barcelona will be in a position to make big signings in the summer transfer window. But the only big thing that came out was Dani Olmo, and Barcelona later faced problems signing him in the second half of his first season.
“Now we can sign a top player; we have been doing it. With a lot of effort, we have reduced the payment of sports wages from 98% of revenue to 54%. This is very good because La Liga and the steering committee see that Barça continues its good evolution. Deco has done a great job.”
‘I would like Lewandowski to stay’ – Laporta
The director of Football Deco has confirmed that the central midfielder is one of the priorities for Barcelona this year, while Robert Lewandowski is expected to leave at the end of his contract. Laporta struck a different tone though.
“I would like Lewandowski to stay. I would do everything I can if he wants to stay; he got it. He came at a difficult time, he helped us a lot to get back on our feet, and face Bayern. If he feels tempted… I know he has offers from Saudi Arabia and the United States. I think Robert does not want to leave. I will try to make Deco understand this.”
Barcelona’s election will be held on Sunday, with Laporta aiming for a fourth term.
