Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., called the indictment of Epstein’s accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell “deeply disturbing” after repeatedly invoking the Fifth Amendment rather than answering any questions.

Members of the House Oversight Committee tried to press Maxwell about his role in the recruitment, grooming and trafficking of young women and girls and his accomplices in those crimes.

I’m invoking my Fifth Amendment right to remain silent,” he repeated.

Comer, the committee’s chairman, said Monday on “Hannity” that the launch was “very disturbing to watch.”

“When you talk about underage girls and their accomplices – and the lack of emotion and pleading with the fifth to avoid incriminating themselves – it was very troubling.”

The Fifth Amendment states in part that no person “shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself.”

The Department of Justice said in a press release that Ghislaine Maxwell was found guilty of “conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in unlawful sexual acts, conspiracy to transport minors to engage in unlawful sexual acts, transportation of a child to engage in unlawful sexual acts, conspiracy to traffic children, and trafficking a minor.” (Joe Schildhorn/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images)

In December 2021, Maxwell was found guilty of complicity in Epstein’s sex trafficking and child exploitation scheme. The DOJ said at the time of his sentencing that Maxwell “seduced and trained young girls to be abused in many ways.”

He is currently serving a 20-year sentence in a Texas prison.

He appeared before lawmakers on Monday morning for a closed-door hearing as part of a bipartisan House investigation into the government’s handling of sex offender and human trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

Maxwell said through his lawyer, if he gets leniency, he will tell the whole truth about Epstein’s crimes, adding that President Donald Trump and former President Bill Clinton are innocent of any wrongdoing.

Comer said Maxwell’s previous offer to testify under immunity was met with “very little support … after meeting with the victims, and they described the heinous crimes that Ms. Maxwell committed.” His latest offering received similar low-key enthusiasm, Comer said.

“Now he’s come back and said, he’s going to talk if he gets clemency from President Trump, and ‘Oh, I can prove that Donald Trump and Bill Clinton were both innocent,'” Comer said.

“That’s going to be a decision for President Trump. I don’t think there’s a lot of public support for clemency,” Comer said.
