Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 7 Auto Twist won’t let you out of it

A few years ago Lenovo showed off a computer stand that uses cameras and AI to follow you around. But now at CES 2026, the company has taken that idea and turned it into a full-fledged system that will actually sell.

Called the ThinkBook Plus Gen 7 Auto Twist, instead of a laptop stand, Lenovo has created a stand-alone notebook that works the same way, plus more. What’s impressive is that apart from having a built-in motor that allows its display to follow you around, the laptop’s design doesn’t look that weird. And after playing around with it a bit, I found a few other tricks I could do.

Instead of using your fingers to open the lid like a luddite, all you have to do is knock a few times and the laptop’s display pops up by itself. From there, you’re greeted with a gorgeous 14-inch 2.8K OLED display and a standard keyboard that won’t disappoint ThinkBook or ThinkPad aficionados. You also get strong specifications including support for Intel’s new Core Ultra Series 3 processors, up to 32GB of RAM, 2TB of storage and a reasonably large 75Whr battery. The laptop also sports a solid selection of ports including two USB-C with Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, a full-size HDMI jack and Wi-Fi 7. And all of this comes in a chassis that weighs 3.1 pounds, which is very reasonable for a 14-inch device.

As for its auto-focus capabilities, the main use case is between presentations and video calls, where the laptop can use its engine, 10-MP web camera and AI to track your face as you move around to stay perfectly in the frame. Compared to the concept I saw before, the laptop pivots and rotates its display smoothly (although it still moves a bit) and if you want, you can make it dance to music. Alternatively, the laptop can analyze your posture to position its screen in the correct position to avoid tilting or automatically switch between laptop, tablet and presentation modes. Although this is a really small feature, what I really like about Auto Twist is that when you turn off the system, the laptop will automatically close its lid, as if tucking itself into the bed.

Another goal of this laptop is that Lenovo presents it as a vertical AI solution for small businesses. Naturally this means the system supports Microsoft’s Copilot+ features, although we also saw a demo of Lenovo’s AI companion. You can not only talk to it, ask it questions or use it to translate other languages like a normal digital assistant, the company has created a friendly face that answers your questions and comments.

One unusual inclusion, which may not make it to retail units, was an AI feature designed to help you understand hidden meanings or subtitles in other languages. However, in my experience (as shown in the video above), this turned out to be a strange excuse to ignore the AI or at least make yourself more concerned with what your friends or colleagues say about you.

My favorite thing about the Auto Twist is that when you close it, it will close its lid. (Sam Rutherford of Engadget)

In the end, I’m still not sure I need a laptop with a display and a camera that I could follow during video calls. But if you have happy feet during business meetings or like to express yourself through movement, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 7 Auto Twist may be the business book you need. And, considering that it features novel technology, its starting price of $1,649 is surprisingly affordable. You will have to wait until it goes on sale in June.
