Mercedes-Benz Backs UK with £20m Formula 1-Powered EV Investment That Creates High-End Jobs
Mercedes-Benz has cast a key vote in delivering the UK’s construction sector after confirming a £20 million partnership to develop electric vehicle technology, creating 150 skilled jobs across Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire.
The German manufacturer will invest twelve million, matched by £10 million from the UK Government, to develop the following High-Power Drive systems for electric vehicles. The project involves Mercedes-Benz and the UK group SMES Engineering, creating a new industrial chain that aims to move technology from prototype to production within three years.
Announced during the state visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the partnership is framed as a strategic moment for both countries. In Britain, it represents new inward investment at a time when the automotive sector is facing global competition, supply pressures and the transition to nitro. In Germany, it prevents access to the UK’s unmatched high-tech electronics and motorsport engineering.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle said the deal shows the deepening of Anglo-German industrial ties and highlights the UK’s strength in cutting-edge innovation.
“This investment shows the strength of our partnership with Germany in new trade and creates good jobs in all of our communities,” said Kile. “By keeping advanced manufacturing technology here in the UK, we are building supply chains and skills that will serve our auto industry for decades to come.”
