Two years after suffering serious injuries from a seemingly normal day of valerine at a local restaurant, an Oklahoma teacher is dead and police are investigating what went wrong.
Third grade teacher Holly Hill, 30, died Thursday, Oct. 23, from what his family called related to an incident that occurred in 2023.
That’s when Hill, a wife and mother of three, ordered a Margarita at Hacienda Las Margaritas Bar & Grill in Elgin, Okla.
“His mouth was on fire, and he knew something was wrong,” Hill’s mother told News9. “Immediately he jumped up and ran to the bathroom, started to throw up, and started to dry his mouth with water.”
In the two and a half years since, Hill has been dealing with health issues and reached a private settlement with the restaurant after the tag, according to News9.
“Over the past two and a half years, while continuing to teach and care for her family, Holly faced a long and difficult medical journey,” loved ones wrote in her obituary.
“Fighting and surviving multiple procedures, the hospital, and uncertain days, she met each challenge with courage, faith and a quiet strength that inspired everyone around her.
Days before Hill’s death, he had another procedure, according to his mother, who wrote on social media that “[t]He had a hole in his esophagus that wasn’t healed but it was better and not as bright, so they were able to call a tile doctor so he could listen to us. He will have to continue with the study diet for a while. He will have to come back in a few weeks for a reading to compare and see progress. “
However, he died on Thursday, his family told the news9.
Friday, Oct. 24, the Elging Police Department, under the guidance of Comanche County District Attorney Kylelka, contacted the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Monday, Oct. 27, Police Chief Porsons issued an update confirming that state investigators “will begin a preliminary investigation into this matter and will be assisted by the Elgin Police Department.”
“OSBI will be the lead agency on this matter. Holly’s family is being notified, and we are asking the public to be patient and build the family,” Parsons said.
Attempts to reach the restaurant for comment were unsuccessful Monday.
In May 2023, the restaurant made a post on social media that appeared to apologize for the incident: “We are very sorry for what happened … In 10 years we have never had a situation like this, a situation that should have happened in the first place.”

“We have never shied away from responsibility and will continue to support them in any way our insurance company is available at the time,” the restaurant said at the time.
“We also want to apologize to him, his family and the Elgin community. Our prayers continue for him and his family,” they wrote.
Hill and her husband, Brandon, met while attending the University of Science and Oklahoma in Cchaasha, earning double majors in Early Childhood Education and Speech.
The couple got married in 2018.

“Holly had a gift for making every child feel special, capable and loved … she poured her heart into helping them,” her Abituart said.
Her family has requested donations to a Memorial scholarship or her children’s education fund, in lieu of flowers, with donation details available in her obituary.
