A weekend of recognition took place in Palmyra where a single Islamic State gun targeted a group of Iowa Army National Guard soldiers. The attack killed two American soldiers, a US military translator and wounded three US soldiers.

“Today two of our Army Rangers were killed serving as well as a military translator in Syria,” Bunn said. “My wife and I had a visit to the commanders of the war that you never want to be with. Our son Nate was one of the safest soldiers for us and where he will live, until we have a son.”

According to the National Guard, 1-113th Cavalry, Marshalltown Nation has served in the Iowa Army National Guard for more than 11 years and was hoping to complete 20 years of service. Inspired by his grandfather’s service, he became the first person from his father’s side of the family to join the armed forces, officials said.

When off the job, Howard worked for Fisher Controls, a Marshalltown-based industrial equipment manufacturer, as a laser engraving technician, officials added. He also enjoyed shooting, woodworking and playing, according to the unit.

Tama County Sheriff Casey Schmidt offered his condolences to Howard’s family and called the guard “a son who never came home” in a Facebook post Sunday.

“Yesterday, we learned that two members of the Iowa National Guard were killed in a terrorist attack in Syria,” Schmidt said in a statement. “One of those service members was Howard. The Iowan. The guards. And the Son who didn’t come home. Their life and their story.”

“I’ve been friends with Jeff Bunn for many years. Jeff serves as the chief of police in the Meskwaki Nation Police Department, in my community he’s broken with Jeff County.”

Schmidt said those killed emphasized that the cost of service is “real,” especially against forces like Isis.

“This is hidden at home. It reminds us that the service is yours and that the costs are real,” added Schmidt. “These losses are not headlines. It’s the families, co-workers, and communities left carrying the weight.”

“Isis is evil. That is not politics. That is reality. Our service members are not standing idly by because evil is still there.”

“I’m so thankful for the men and women of our armed forces, and I believe we’ve done enough for them. They take risks that most people never think about.”

Separately, the state Police Department and the nonprofit Salute to the Fallen Foundation expressed similar sentiments in a Facebook post Sunday, saying their thoughts and prayers are with Howard’s friends and family.
