The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has doubled down on its warning against transgender surgery on children under 19, a move one member told Fox News reflects a broader return to “common sense” and science over ideology.
“[They’re] really looking at the evidence, and their statement says that the benefits do not outweigh the harm, too [that] the current evidence is low quality or low quality,” Dr. Sheila Nazarian told “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday.
“These are the kids we’re talking about. Many of us have been very vocal about this issue, and I’m very pleased to see that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons is doubling down on their statement from last year.”

The agency updated its guidelines on Tuesday to officially recommend delaying sex-change surgery procedures until patients are at least 19 years old, citing long-term data from Europe that raised concerns about outcomes for children.
Nazarian noted that “progressive” European countries such as England, Sweden and Finland have already instituted such procedures for children, citing long-term findings that also influenced the ASPS decision.
When asked how the procedures were allowed to continue without evidence to support their mental health effectiveness, Nazarian said he initially thought doctors were doing the right thing until he approached someone with questions about the data.

“I said, ‘What about all this long-term data coming out of Europe?’ He said, ‘What’s the long-term data from Europe?’ And at that moment, I realized that this is driven by ideas. This is due to money,” he said.
“The hospital systems and doctors who perform these surgeries have made a lot of money. Also, this should not be the way we treat our patients, especially not children.”
Nazarian continued, saying that many of the children who underwent the procedures had mental health or developmental conditions and were not given adequate informed consent.

“30 to 60 percent depending on where you look at the research of these children who are diagnosed at the same time medically, psychologically, behaviorally like autism, like depression, like anxiety, and those doctors and psychiatrists tell their parents, ‘You can have a transgender child or a dead child,’ and that is emotional abuse,” he said.
“There’s no evidence that these procedures actually reduce suicide, so they’re being lied to. They weren’t given informed consent, and based on that, I think they’re really guilty.”
