President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Canada is no longer welcome on his newly formed Peace Council.

In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump rescinded Canada’s invitation, telling Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that his country would no longer join “the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled.”

“Dear Prime Minister Carney: Please allow this letter to represent that the Peace Council is withdrawing its invitation to you to join Canada, which will be the most prestigious Council of Leaders ever assembled, at any time,” Trump wrote.

Trump unveiled the board during a speech and signing Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, with leaders from Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia joining him on stage.

The president’s refusal happened after he said on Wednesday that the United States should take control of Greenland in order to build a large missile defense system called “Golden Dome”, which he said will also protect Canada, which he said is dependent on American security.

“We’re building a Golden Dome that will, by its very nature, protect Canada. Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should also be grateful,” Trump said during a press conference in Davos.

“But they’re not. I looked at your prime minister yesterday. He didn’t thank us very much. They should thank us, Canada. Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements,” he said, referring to the words Carney made earlier this week.

Although Carney did not mention Trump by name, he warned in his remarks that the international order based on rules is collapsing as “superpowers” continue to use economic and security forces to coerce allies.

The prime minister said that “middle powers” such as Canada must listen to the “wake-up call” that compliance does not guarantee security, and called for a strategy focused on decentralization, collective action and respect for sovereignty.

Trump said he will chair the new peace board, which will also include senior political, political and business officials, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and billionaire Marc Rowan.
