Raphinha, Marc Bernal and Anthony Elanga swap open goals in Barcelona-Newcastle

Barcelona did not get a point until the last blow in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Newcastle United in St. James’ Park. However, it only took them five minutes to open the scoring in the second half at Camp Nou.

Hansi Flick made one change in the first leg, bringing on Eric Garcia in place of Ronald Araujo at right back. Equally, Eddie Howe started Anthony Gordon in place of Will Osula up front in his only change from the 1-1 draw. Newcastle had the better start, getting two shots on goal from Joan Garcia, but it was Barcelona who struck first.

Lamine Yamal feeds Raphinha for the opening goal

It was Newcastle pressing high that got the opener. Lamine Yamal turned to Lewis Hall in the middle of the field, and fed Raphinha on the right. Interchanging with Fermin Lopez on the outside, the Brazilian had plenty of time to slot into the bottom left corner after just six minutes, giving the Blaugrana the lead on the night and on aggregate.

Newcastle United responded within 10 minutes

It didn’t take long for Newcastle’s reply to arrive, with Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes combining down the left. Anthony Elanga was selected after defending Barcelona, and his fate was perfect.

Marc Bernal restores Barcelona’s advantage

As good as Newcastle’s response was, Barcelona had theirs. A set-piece from Raphinha was headed at the far post, and Gerard Martin nodded back across the six-yard box rather than own an own goal. Marc Bernal continued his fine goalscoring form, finishing easily from close range.

Elanga levels before the 30′ mark

Barcelona was their worst enemy in the second goal conceded. Lamine Yamal delivered the ball deep into his own half, and Harvey Barnes beat Ronald Araujo to get the ball across the box. Elanga went in behind Joao Cancelo with the fourth goal in 28 minutes.
