Raunchy 80s Sci-Fi Comedy Extreme, Cult Classic Thriller

Written by Robert Scucci | Published

Here’s a life lesson you should have learned by age five, but it can work at any age if you’re dumb enough. If you’re offered strange goo from a stranger who lives in the apartment you just moved into, don’t eat it. In 1988 Slime City explores what could go wrong if this clear scenario plays out, and frankly, it’s not good. It’s actually quite disgusting.

Slime City it has all the trappings of an old cult. It was produced on a reported budget of $100,000, and looks the part. Billed as a “guts horror movie,” Places to stay in Slime City The creature effects hold up surprisingly well in 2025, and are so revolting that I strongly recommend not eating while watching this one.

Drippy, Violent Mess

Slime City 1988

Slime City centers on Alex (Robert C. Sabin), a young professional preparing to move into his new apartment. Although his girlfriend Lori (Mary Huner) is skeptical about moving in with Alex right away, moving closer to his place allows them to toy with the idea of taking their relationship to the next level. Once settled in with help from his best friend Jerry (TJ Merrick), Alex is ready to find a place and looks forward to meeting Lori’s parents.

After briefly greeting her gothic neighbors, Roman (Dennis Embdy) and Nicole (also Mary Huner, but wearing fishnets and a black wig), Alex is invited to dinner by the former. Roman takes great pleasure in feeding Alex a mysterious green goo, and a green spirit allegedly bottled by an alchemist named Zachary (Daniel Frye), the father of the building’s master, Lizzy (Jane Doniger Reibel). Still haunted by what he’s eaten, Alex has sex with Nicole, and things quickly go from bad to worse.

When Alex wakes up the next day, he is covered in slime, which starts coming out of his pores whenever he gets angry. Having been turned into a monster that only feeds on suffering, Alex can return to his normal self after killing someone in cold blood. The problem is that he can’t stop eating and drinking the preparations Roman has completely filled his refrigerator, creating a vicious cycle of genetic mutation, body horror, and murder that shows no signs of abating.

Realizing that this was all part of an elaborate plan, Alex finds himself trapped between his appetite, his desire to kill, the paralysis that occurs whenever he can’t fit, and Lori. He knows that Lizzy is somehow behind the spiral that he is caught in, but he is powerless to end the cycle, leaving death and destruction in his wake.

Sloppy, Low-Budget Charm

I’ll be the first to admit that Slime City leaves a lot to be desired in the narrative, but you also have to consider what it’s trying to accomplish within its tight budget. Alex’s switch to Slime City absolutely bad. When I was hunting for pictures of this very subject, I almost threw up in my mouth because her dripping face and messy appendages are bad burners, and not in a fun way.

Couple this with the uncomfortable sexual tension between Alex, Lori, and Nicole, and you’re in for some seriously unpleasant viewing. If that was the intention of writer and director Greg Lamberson, then it’s mission accomplished.

Slime City 1988

Slime City it’s a sci-fi thriller that plays on body horror at its best, or at its worst, depending on your mood, as good as it gets, but it’s not for the faint of heart. If you think you have the stomach for it, you can now stream the movie for free on Tubi. Don’t just say I didn’t warn you.
