Raunchy, R-Rated Thriller Is A New Guaranteed One-Night Stand

Written by Robert Scucci | Published

The danger you don’t know is not something you need to talk about with your children, because as an adult you don’t really know what kind of mind is there waiting to pounce when you least expect it. This is especially true if you meet in a seedy motel for a one-night stand with tragic consequences, like in 2023. My love. Things may go off without a hitch, and you may have your words safe in place, but what happens when your romantic encounter goes off the rails and you suddenly have to run for your life?

Indirectly speaking, My love it’s as confusing as it is sexy, and as violent as it is disturbing. Following the chain of causality is easy enough once you sink your teeth into it, but you’ll learn a thing or two about these characters, one of whom may or may not be a deadly assassin on the brink of their final attack, which you may not like. Never know who you trust, My love it’s one of those events that you need to see to believe, and hopefully you’ll find the right person along the way.

Lady, Demon, and Mr. Snuffle

Strange Darling 2023

My lovedespite the ineffectiveness of the tomfoolery, it plays like a typical game of cat and mouse. We are introduced to the Lady (Willa Fitzgerald) and her male suitor, called the Demon (Kyle Gallner). Their introductions come in the heat of the moment, this lady runs away from the Devil who has a gun and knows exactly how to use it.

He seeks refuge in his farm owned by hippie disaster preppers Frederick (Ed Begley Jr.) and Genevieve (Barbara Hershey), but it soon becomes clear that he will not find safety here if the Devil is still hot on his trail, which he has every reason to believe he is.

After introducing us to the story during its conflict, My love then circles back to provide the context that led up to this moment, but before the teasing that comes later. The relationship between the Princess and the Devil begins in a Hood River County, Oregon motel, where they meet to discuss a deal that involves foul play. Drugs, handcuffs, beatings, that kind of thing.

The encounter begins innocently enough, with the lady establishing “Mr. Snuffle” as her safe word in case her submissive dreams fail and she needs to get out. The Devil honors this request, but it doesn’t take long before the tables are turned and the power between them changes completely. Soon, the two sculptors find themselves at odds, each harboring dark secrets they’d like to keep hidden. What you really need to know is that none of them go down without a fight after dark.

Non-Linear Is Cool, But Would Work In Order Also

As much as I appreciate indirect storytelling, I don’t think so My love it actually needed it to be a viable thriller. If the same story were told chronologically, it would be just as brutal, and the revelations would come just as hard. The “aha” moments that come with the story in sequence make for interesting transitions, but if each of the six chapters My love played out in real time, the same levels of tension will still be present because of how uninterrupted the story itself is.

In other words, the foundation was already solid. The indirect structure feels less important and more like a stylistic flex that borders on gimmicky. With performances as strong as what Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner bring to the table, the story doesn’t need that extra layer to sell the chaos.

Whether you agree with me or not is beside the point, because My love it’s still a thrill to watch what’s going on. Both the Princess and the Devil are ruthless in their pursuits, and watching their relationship go from run-of-the-mill to all-out antagonists is worth the price of admission alone.

As of this writing, My love airs on Paramount+.
