A Memphis lawmaker wants to limit the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in schools in Tennessee.

House Bill 1482, proposed by Democratic Tennessee State Rep. Gabby Salinas, will prohibit ICE from entering school campuses and require the state to inform staff, students, and security about their rights when contacted by federal agents, unless the agents provide advance notice or observe certain restrictions.

The bill seeks to prevent the use of certain public buildings, schools, and religious institutions for certain forced migration activities. The Trump administration has repealed a long-standing policy barring ICE officials from arresting undocumented individuals in schools, houses of worship, hospitals, or other so-called “sensitive areas.”

HOUSE REPUBLICANS PROTECT ICE AGENT FROM FATAL SHOT, SAYS USE OF LAW WAS RIGHT

“Here in Tennessee we ask teachers to teach under conditions that are almost like war. What happens in other cities can happen here in Memphis and I don’t want us to lose lives or have these terrible events in schools where children should learn. This bill aims to keep all students safe and provide a good environment for learning,” Salinas told Fox News Digital.

Salinas spoke about Renee Nicole Good who was shot and killed by ICE in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Wednesday. The Trump administration says he used his car to try to outrun federal officials during immigration enforcement.

Government authorities have started arresting protesters following this incident.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has mentioned this the fatal shot of Good as a response to an “act of domestic terrorism,” the alleged driver had been “stalking, blocking, and obstructing” ICE officers for hours before the incident.

Salinas, a Democrat, faces an uphill battle to get the bill passed as the General Assembly is dominated by Republicans. It is reported that the Legislature plans to reconvene next week and will present a list of laws related to the immigration law.

Salinas told Fox News Digital that the bill is an important part of the legislature’s agenda.

“Tennessee is a very long state. It’s hard to see and communicate with other elected officials if we’re not in session. So this is just the beginning,” he said. “I just introduced the bill earlier this week. So we’re still early in our legislative session, but this is an important part of our legislative agenda.”

In addition, Tennessee Republicans have reportedly met with Trump administration officials to advance immigration priorities.

Per Knox News, “Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton told Knox News exclusively on Jan. 8 that his discussions with Stephen Miller, President Donald Trump’s top deputy and deportation architect, began even before US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrived in Memphis last year.”

Tennessee Republicans reportedly want to set a precedent for immigration laws as they work with Trump.

“Sexton expects about eight or nine bills that will make Tennessee a testing ground for repeating Trump’s crackdown on immigrants at the state level when the new legislative session begins Jan. 13. The idea is for Tennessee’s GOP supermajority to pass a series of laws that other states can use as a model,” Knox News reported.
