Stranger Things Creators Always Prove They’re Bad Writers With Each New Interview

By Chris Snellgrove | Published
I Stranger Things The series finale was very divisive, and left fans with more questions than answers. The good news is that the Duffer Brothers continue to provide interviews where they try to clarify the most confusing aspects of the final episode; the bad news is that the answers they give are deeply, deeply unsatisfying.
At this point, these interviews have confirmed something that many fans have been afraid to admit for a long time: The Duffer Brothers are lazy, apathetic writers who never hope to deliver a satisfying final season. Stranger Things followers.
No Real Explanation For Vecna Kidnapping 12 Children

For example, Vecna kidnapped 12 children to pull off his crazy plan to unite the worlds, and fans spent weeks speculating as to why this number was so important. The most common theory is that it had something to do with timing, given that Season 4’s Vecna used a grandfather clock as a form of warning before attacking a victim. Some fans have even developed elaborate theories that this villain will go back in time in Season 5, altering the timeline to stop all the pain his presence has caused characters like Eleven.
However, in a recent interview with Collider, the Duffers were asked specifically why Vecna kidnapped 12 children and not a different number. Surprisingly, Ross Duffer responded that “there’s no specific reason other than he realized how much power he could exert over Will, and to do something on this planet-shaking scale, I’m not sure how we did that math.” His brother, Ross Duffer, chimed in and said, “Substantially, or figuratively, we love the clock,” but there was no greater importance than the exact number of children.
Hidden Demogorgons, Hidden Pain

Another thing that confused fans was the absence of Demogorgons in the final battle. Not only were they iconic Stranger Things they are evil from the beginning, but the final battle took place in their home territory. Again, followers try to develop their own ideas; others speculate that the Demogorgons may have been spying on our heroes elsewhere, or perhaps guarding less obvious entrances to the abyss. Some fans even thought they might be busy with cool, off-screen battles with soldiers while our old Scooby Gang fights Vecna and the Mind Flayer.
But in an interview with The Wrap, Matt Duffer said that the only reason there are no Demogorgons (or dogs, bats, or other small criminals) in the abyss is that “Vecna wasn’t expecting this sneak attack on her home.” He said he “never in a million years would have thought of that” and “they are out there somewhere.” Obviously, this soft response was disappointing Stranger Things fans, many of whom revealed that Vecna was peeking into Eleven’s mind before this, so she should have known both what they were planning to do and (at least approximately) where everyone else was.
The list goes on: for example, Will Byers gets his new sorcerer powers because of his connection with Vecna, and that villain feels pain (and vice versa) when the Mind Flayer is attacked because of their mental link. When Collider asked the Duffers why Will didn’t feel pain during the final battle (remember, he shares the exact same mental link), Matt Duffer replied that “we don’t show him when the Mind Flayer is attacked; when asked if that meant Will might have been suffering off-screen, he quickly replied that “we wanted to focus on the final battle with our heroes.”
Play Is Not A Thing

In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffers were asked if there was a scene that was written when Joyce and Hopper realized that they were studying with Henry Creel (the future Vecna), something that was referred to in a flashback scene (Joyce is passing out flyers for the play he directed playing this guy) and was seen in the play. Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Ross Duffer sarcastically responded with “yeah, I’m sure there was” before saying they didn’t want to “overwhelm” fans with too many references to the play and that showing the Joyce/Hopper interview “would be confusing” to “someone who’s never seen the play.”
That sounds good on paper, but if the Duffers really feel that way, why did they hide so much Vecna information in a drama that 99 percent of fans will never watch? Why, in fact, do they go out of their way to make sure we see a young Joyce handing out a flyer confirming she knows Henry Creel well if this isn’t going to be directly relevant Stranger Things? If we take the Duffers at face value here, they come across as snobbish writers, lazy writers, or both.
No Original Plan: Writers of Stranger Things Have Been Doing Things This Time

That is the key issue with all of these Stranger Things interviews: the brothers built a successful show with a series of terrifying mysteries and then spent the better part of a decade promising that all would be revealed. After that, they released a sloppy final season and final episode that left fans with more questions than answers. To add insult to injury, they are now trying to answer these questions, and every answer seems to confirm that they are making this up as they go along.
Sorry, Duffers: it’s late, but you guys really need to learn that less is more, especially as you focus on newly announced creations. Stranger Things a spinoff. In a perfect world, you’ll learn from your writing mistakes and do a better job, especially if the biggest broadcaster in the world gives you unlimited time and an unlimited budget. But if that’s not possible, the least you can do is keep your traps closed during interviews…at the end of the day, that’s always better than making sure you’re little writers who put a little thought and planning into it. Stranger Things there are millions of fans of the show!
