Super Bowl LX: Seahawks defense dominates in victory over Patriots

The Seattle Seahawks’ strong defense led to a Super Bowl LX victory over the New England Patriots, 29-13, on Sunday night.
It’s the first time since 2013 that the Seahawks have won the Super Bowl, and it’s revenge for how the 2014 season ended with Patriots quarterback Malcolm Butler’s famous goal-line interception to end Seattle’s chances at back-to-back Lombardi Trophies.
This was not an offensive kick in the game, but it was a strong defensive battle for both teams. But it was the Seahawks’ defense that had constant pressure and disruption, and the necessary turnovers that were key to winning the Super Bowl.

The Seahawks got off to a great start early in the game, as Jason Myers hit a 33-yard field goal to open the scoring.
But it’s been slow on that front since then. Drake Maye and the Patriots couldn’t find anything against Seattle, the NFL’s top defense this season, scoring on all five of their plays in the first half until Maye took a knee with seconds left in the second quarter.
Myers was able to kick two more field goals for the Seahawks, as Sam Darnold and the offense couldn’t get pay dirt. At this level, however, a 9-0 lead in the first half seemed bigger because the Patriots offense was struggling.

The Patriots had 51 yards in the first half, and Maye went 6-for-11 for 48 yards and was sacked three times for total losses of 30 yards.
Unfortunately for New England, a long wait to get back on the field in the second half after Bad Bunny’s halftime performance didn’t change their fortunes. They threw three touchdowns before Derick Hall’s fumble, which was recovered by Byron Murphy II at the Patriots’ one-yard line.

By leading by 12 points, Darnold made sure that NFL history was not made as the only Super Bowl without a score. He found tight end AJ Barner wide open for a 16-yard touchdown on the ensuing possession.
However, Barner’s touchdown clearly sparked the Patriots’ offense, and the desperation opened Maye up a bit on the next drive. It was Mack Hollins catching back-to-back big scores for New England, the first being a 24-yard touchdown catch. Then, Maye went right back to the source, dropped a dime to Hollins on the left sideline for a 35-yard touchdown.
The Patriots held momentum despite a 19-7 deficit on the scoreboard, and it helped that Darnold missed Rasheed Shaheed long on a pass near the end zone to force a punt.
But Maye’s bad night continued after he threw an errant pass at the hands of veteran Seahawks safety Julian Love. Once again, the Seahawks turned the turnover into points, this time with Myers kicking his fifth field goal of the night, and set a new Super Bowl record for most field goals in the “Big Game.”
With a 15-point lead, the Seahawks continued to find success with a four-man rush. But it was another great blitz that saw more Seahawks come home, as Maye was sacked again, this time by Uchenna Nwosu picking up the ball and running the ball 44 yards back for a touchdown.

Maye was able to find Stevenson for a seven-yard touchdown with 2:21 left on the clock to make it a 29-13 game after a failed two-point attempt. But the Patriots’ efforts were too little, too late in the end.
The Seahawks ran out the clock and erupted in celebration, as the No. 1 in the NFC ends an incredible 2025 season in the Bay Area.
