Ter Stegen helps a point for Girona’s early recovery against Getafe

Girona 1-1 Getafe

Girona continued their unbeaten start to 2026 against Getafe with two consecutive late-game wins deep into stoppage time. Los Azulones can take plenty of positives from their performance in Montilivi, but not the three points Jose Bordalas probably felt his side deserved.

It was a fresh start for both sides, with Barcelona loanee Marc-Andre ter Stegen making his debut for the Catalan club, with Fran Beltran in midfield. Against them, Martin Satriano made his second start for Getafe up front along with new boy Luis Vazquez, and Zaid Romero at left back. The home side were coming off an impressive three-match winning run that lifted them away from relegation zone Getafe at the weekend, and their newfound confidence showed in the first half.

Michel Sanchez’s team took the game to Getafe, their best moment came in the middle of the first half, as they held the ball, they beat the Bordalas team by switching outside, with balls in the middle. Vitor Reis forced the first big save of the night with a header off the bar by David Soria. Soon after, Thomas Lemar drove at goal from the edge of the box, and he got a low shot, off the post to the amazement of the crowd. At the break, Getafe managed to disrupt Girona’s momentum.

The second half changed the rhythm, Getafe started to play with confidence. Although they didn’t apply much pressure on the Girona goal, they were moving forward with purpose, and Satriano and Vasquez started to show signs of their initial chemistry. Just before the hour, it was Juan Iglesias who was released into space on the left side of Luis Milla. His cross into the six-yard box was well met by Vasquez, who beat Daley Blind at close range for the first goal, past ter Stegen.

Once in front, Getafe never looked back. Happy to dig the trenches at Montilivi, Girona showed little signs of being able to get past Getafe’s backline, who defended with numbers and complacency. Los Azulones looked to have effectively destroyed all the tools Girona used to break them down, Alex Moreno’s goal the only clear they gave up.

Until the last four seconds of stoppage time, when Moreno came down the left and cut the ball into the penalty area. One thing Getafe prides itself on is defending crosses, but for the second time in the game, Reis hit his mark, and this time his awkward-looking header was placed from close range, sending Michel down the touchline in celebration.

Bordalas made just one change a game, sending on another new player for defender Sebastian Boselli, and it looks like a smart move. The last game was a set-piece, which Boselli brought down in the box on the left side, finishing low from close range at ter Stegen’s legs. The German goalkeeper threw himself down, caught the ball between them, and in fact, ended the game with honors even, the last important contribution of the night for the loanees.

That point was just Getafe’s second in seven games, and helped them escape the relegation zone for another week, dropping level points with Mallorca. Bordalas was positive after the game with a better image of his team with two well-known players on the pitch – they host Celta Vigo next weekend. Girona will visit Real Oviedo in 10th place, only three points to the European place (seven points), in the relegation zone (four points).
