The clip shows an Indian doctor, not an Egyptian prolop, visiting an Ethiopian region

Ethiopia has recently accused Eritrea of collaborating with rebels from the Northern Tiggray region within the possibility of the Horn of Africa and neighboring countries. A clip circulating widely in Ethiopia purports to show a delegation from Egypt visiting Tigray after entering the Eritrean region, suggesting cooperation between Ethiopia’s political rivals. However, the claim is false: The video shows an Indian surgeon visiting Tigray to provide training and medical treatment.

The post contains a text in Amharic that says “Egyptian ambassador entered Mekelle via Eritrea”.

The ambassador tested is not identified, nor heard at the time of writing.

Mekelle is the capital of the Tigray region. Tigray shares borders with Eritrea, a country that gained its independence from Ethiopia in 1993.

Indian doctor

AFP Test Check is used by Instify-Fid-Fidy to perform reverse image searches on keyframes from video.

The search provided many results, including a post in Tigirinya and English on X indicating that the person seen was an Indian doctor named Arvind Verma Jangid (he is the blueprint here).

A keyword search for Arvind Verma Jangid shows up in the listings of several medical websites, such as here and here (archived here and here).

This described him as an orthopedic surgeon in the city of Wort-Central India.

Jangid shared many photos from his trip to Mekelle on Facebook here and here (archived here and here).

He wrote: “I am happy to share that I have completed 109 complex surgeries – all on patients who had never had a successful operation – here in Ethiopia, Africa.”

Ilisha Surgery is an orthopedic procedure that uses an external implant device to expand, reshape, or reconstruct bones.

Although the clip shared in the fake post was filtered from a side angle, the individual’s appearance and clothing are well in line with Jangid’s photos.
