The High Carlinal celebrates the old Latin weight in St. Peter in the symbol of traditional hope

Vatican City (AP) – Catholics are feeling abandoned after Pope Francis banned the traditional Latin Mass as they prepare to celebrate the traditional basilica in St. Peter’s Basilica with Pope Leo Xilica.

Cardinal Raymond Burke, the conservative American Fairalight, was to celebrate the old mass of pilgrims on Saturday during their year visiting Rome. Another Cardinal, Matteo Zuppi in Italy, celebrated a full staff of vespers on Friday night.

For many traditionalists, that moment became a visible sign that Leo could sympathize with their plight, after they felt rejected by Francis and his 2021 crack in the old Iturdown.

Francis had taken action after the spread of the ancient Liturgy, especially in the United States, caused by the increase in religious political adoption and the decrease in church attendance in the church as it continues to be developed.

“I’m very hopeful,” said Rubén Peretó Rivas, professor of ancient philosophy at Argentina’s Universidad Nacional de Cuyo and editor of Pilgrimage. “Papa Leo’s first signs are conversational and they listen, they really listen to everyone.”

Liturgy wars for a long time

The latest cycles in the Liturgy wars date back to the Second Vatican Council, the meetings of the 1960s that used the Church. Among the changes was celebrating mass in the field, rather than in Latin, with the priest facing the faithful in the cell rather than the altar.

In the following decades, the old Latin weight was still available but not widespread. In those years too, the Vatican was faced with the growth of a schismatic group that rejected the reforms of Victoria II and celebrated only the Latin weight, the Society of St. Pius X

Pope Benedict XVI, both as a cardinal and later as Pontiff, tried to heal the Schism and bring the SSPX group back under the wing of Rome, fearing the spread of the same Church, Pre-Vatican II.

In 2007, the renewed restrictions to celebrate the old Latin weight as part of his full access to virgins.

“The holy united generations remain holy and holy with us,” Nenedict said at the time.

Francis’ 2021 Crackdown

In one of the controversial acts of his anglicate, Francis in the year 2021 went back to Benedict’s restrictions of 2007 and restored the restrictions of celebrating the old weight. Francis said its spread has become a source of division in the church and was exploited by Vatican II.

Under Francis’s rules, bishops must offer a shoo if, say, a newly ordained priest wants to celebrate an ancient festival. The Holy See should give the right if the bishop wants to specify more Parish Church because of the crowds, to force some ceremonies to be held in church halls far away.

Instead of healing the rift, however, Francis’s rift seemed to go further and further damage the marriage.

“We are orphans,” said Christian Marquant, the Pilgrimage’s French organizer.

Leo election and vows to bring peace and healing

Leo, the first American pope, was elected by broad consensus among the cardinals and said his goal was unity and reconciliation in the church. Many conservatives and conservatives urge to heal the Limorgical divide that has spread over the Latin mass, in particular.

After Leo’s election, Marquant wrote a letter to Leo on behalf of 70 traditional groups asking, among other things, for permission to celebrate mass according to the tradition of St. Peter Basilica during the traditional annual pilgrimage to Rome.

Burke, who had an audience with Leo on Aug 22, gave him the letter. Leo called the right one in St. Peter, Cardinal Mauro Gambatti, and gave his permission, said Marquant.

Francis, too, had allowed a Latin mass to be celebrated in the Basilica even after its 2021 rupture, but only by lower priests. In 2023 and 2024, the traditional customs did not find anyone willing to approach Francis to ask for permission, and no smell is celebrated, said the smile.

In July, Vatican documents came under fire and reversed the original reason for imposing the initial restrictions: Francis said he was responding to “desires expressed” by the Vatican’s doctrinal office.

But the documents say that the majority of Catholic bishops who responded to the survey expressed general satisfaction with the old Latin weight and warned that it would do more damage “

Traditional Catholics have different types of kings they trust

James Rodio, a psychiatrist and father of three children, has been going to the Latin Fort with his family for almost three decades in Cleveland, Ohio.

“I was just struck by the respect and the beauty and the symbolism of the actions and the touch, and definitely,” he said on the phone.

Even though Rodio always received a lot of traditional Cleveland, he and other believers felt “frustration” in Francis’ rapdown and the restrictions it imposed.

“After all, there was sadness” and a sense that Francis didn’t understand them, she said. “How can any organization go into the 16th or 17th centuries and say it wasn’t working?”

Rodio said that he and some other parishioners have hope for Leo and hope that he will allow more regions to offer traditional Litional Phurgy. While Rodio admits something clear, Leo does not need to make Francis look old: he can simply teach the office of the Vatican Liturgy to graciously accept individual requests from the bishops as they come.

In recent weeks, the diocese of Cleveland received a two-year extension to continue allowing Latin mass in two diocesan churches.

“My guess is Leo would try to do more by doing more in public,” Rodorio said.
