The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has condemned the recent sentence of the Indonesian government against Israel’s national gymnastics team.
The Indonesian government had refused Israeli visas to enter the country for the 53-year-old world gymnastics championship in Jakarta, which began on Sunday.
“The limited position of the IOC is clear: All eligible athletes, teams and sports officials must be able to participate in international sports competitions and the basic principles governing the Olympic movement,” said the IOC statement.

“It is therefore the direct responsibility of the host country, the organizer and the sports organizations concerned to make sure that this principle is fully respected and that all the necessary guarantees are given to the appropriate authorities of the home country in advance.”
The IOC also said its officials will discuss the situation with Indonesia at its next meeting.
“Sports must always be a safe space for athletes to achieve their dreams; and athletes must not be blamed for political decisions,” said the statement.
Indonesia has said it will not grant visas to the Israeli team because of the war in Gaza. Then on Tuesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected Israel’s request to intervene.
The Israel Gymnariac Federation (IGF) issued a statement regarding the decision.
“The rules are clear, and Indonesia’s actions are clear about them. It is impossible for a country to lead another nation to compete with the world while the controlling masses stand still,” said the statement, via the BBC.
“This decision undermines the very foundations of the sport and fair competition, and deals a huge blow to the athletes and staff who have worked so tirelessly in this moment.”
Indonesia previously lost its right to host the FIFA World Cup-20 when the governor of Bali refused to host the Israeli team.
Indonesia’s recent opener against the IGF is the latest example of the restrictions placed on teams and Israeli sports and fans in recent months.
