Top-Rated King Arthur Adaptation on Netflix Divides Critics and Audiences

The legend of King Arthur has been changed over and over again, from the earliest Excalibur to The Pendragon Cycle: The Rise of Merlinbut if one of the Knights of the Round Table stands out, it is always Lancelot. in 2021 The Green Knight makes up for that by keeping up with the classic Sir Gawain story for the big screen. David Lowry’s take on the classics is beautiful, reminiscent of Renaissance paintings. The shadows and the dark, dank castle walls never looked good, which is why it’s even more disappointing that the film itself is a slog to pass up.
A Different Kind of Arthurian Legend

Dev Patel plays Sir Gawain, the son of Morgan le Fey and nephew of King Arthur, but although he is generally considered one of the strongest actors in Arthur’s Knights, The Green Knight it starts with him in the brothel. He falls in love with one of the girls there, Essel (Alicia Vikander), who is featured in the film.
The scene at the Christmas feast where the eccentric Green Knight (Ralph Ineson) offers to play a game of beheading with Arthur’s court is not set too far into the film, and Gawain cuts the Green Knight down with Excalibur. The Knight then stands up, raises his head, and reminds Gawain that he will see him in a year to give his gift.

This is Lowry’s place The Green Knight it takes your time to get to the Green Chapel. First, Gawain lives a whole year as if it were his last, which he may be. Finally, (and given the pace of the film, finally is the right way to describe it) Gawain finds the King (Joel Edgerton) and his wife (also Alicia Vikander, in case the theme was too subtle). You would think that the interaction between Gawain and the Princess is the film’s biggest departure from the classic poem, but no, that will be the ending.
At that time The Green Knight arrives at the Green Chapel, you know this is not a direct adaptation of the original story. Lowry’s decision to change the ending is either a bold storytelling choice or an example of the worst tendencies of Hollywood producers. Viewers, at least those who made it to the end, are still divided to this day.
The Green Knight Divided Audiences

The critics worshiped The Green Knight upon its release, indicated by an 89 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and for good reason. The cinematography is among the best of the last 20 years, there are more characters during the last hour than your English freshman midterm, and everyone involved gives a highlight reel performance. Patel in particular deserved consideration for an extra medal with 202.
The problem is that one part of the Rotten Tomatoes formula shows 50 percent of the audience didn’t like it The Green Knightand even today, when the film appears on social media, it is always “it looks good, but…”. You can’t even tell that Walking is a throwback to adult dramas: it’s just a slow, contemplative film. Combined with the ending it’s a recipe for a late cult classic, but that’s the ceiling.
Today, you can catch up The Green Knightt on Netflix and judge for yourself if it’s a work of art or if you do King Arthur: Legend of the Sword it looks like a classic.
