President Donald Trump is threatening to back the anti-election campaign against six House Republicans who joined Democrats in voting to roll back his tariffs on Canada.

The president sent a dire warning to GOP lawmakers in the House and Senate just before his plan broke down on Capitol Hill Wednesday evening.

“Any Republican, in the House or Senate, who votes against TARIFFS will face consequences come Election time, and that includes the Primaries!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

He pointed out that the trade deficit was greatly reduced while the US financial markets hit record highs due to his tax policies.

“Furthermore, the TARIFF has provided us with Great National Security because the mere mention of the name makes States agree to our strong desires,” Trump continued.

“The TARIFF has provided us with Economic and National Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this right.”

Democrats successfully secured a vote on a measure to repeal Trump’s emergency action on the northern border using a method of forcing votes over the opposition of the majority of the House leadership called a discretionary vote.

Six Republicans voted to approve the measure through Reps. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., Kevin Kiley, R-Calif., Don Bacon, R-Neb., Jeff Hurd, R-Colo., and Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa.

One Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, voted with most Republicans on the issue. It passed 219-211.

It’s unclear how much of an impact Trump’s threat will have, however.

Both Newhouse and Bacon are not running for re-election in the 2026 midterms, and Trump is already endorsing Massie’s opponent.

Kiley, whose district was most affected by the California Democrats’ new congressional map, has not said whether or where he will run for re-election.

Fitzpatrick and Hurd are both popular incumbents in their districts, which are top targets for Democrats in November.

Trump signed an executive order in February 2025, imposing another 25% tariff on many goods from Canada and Mexico. Energy from Canada was subject to an additional 15% tax.

At the time, the White House said it was punishment for those countries not wanting to do more to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and illegal drugs into the US.

Opponents of Trump’s tariff plan have criticized his move to fight Canada in particular, saying it unfairly harms one of the US’s closest allies and trading partners at the expense of the American people themselves.

But Republicans who voted against the legislation pointed out that Trump said the fentanyl crisis was the reason for issuing the emergency in the first place, saying the drug is still killing Americans.

The legislation now heads to the Senate, where Republicans voted to rebuke Trump’s tax plan in the past despite similar warnings from the president.
