Ubisoft is taking ‘Rainbow Six Siege’ offline after a major hack

Ubisoft has shut down the servers of the Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege X more than 24 hours after a major system outage over the weekend. Hackers have reportedly gained access to the first-person shooter’s servers, offering in-game currency worth millions in real-world value.

R6 credits are in-game currency that can only be purchased with real-world currency, and are used to purchase new playable characters or cosmetic items. The Ubisoft Store is selling 15,000 R6 Credits for $99.99, which means 2 billion would be more than $13 million.

A few players also reported seeing strange in-game notifications while playing Rainbow Six Siege Xcontinuing to point out that something is happening. Pop-up notifications clearly display the names of blocked users instead of relayed messages such as “What else are they hiding from us?,” “All work and no play makes me a boring boy,” and the lyrics to Shaggy’s 2000 hit song “It Wasn’t Me.”
“The ban ticker has been disabled in the past,” he wrote Rainbow Six Siege XOfficial X account. “Any messages seen were not processed by us.”

Ubisoft first acknowledged the hack shortly after 9 am ET / 6 am PT on Saturday morning, with Rainbow Six Siege XX’s account posts that it is “aware of the incident” affecting the game and is “working on a resolution.” Less than two hours later, it announced that both Rainbow Six Siege X The market there was closed and they were working to fix the issue. If you have already continued a Rainbow Six Siege X in stores with your unexpected R6 Credit, the good news is that you will not be penalized. Ubisoft says that players will not be banned if they use the credits they received. However, you won’t be able to enjoy your in-game purchases for long. All transactions occurring after 6 am ET / 3 am PT on Dec. 27 will be postponed, and the Marketplace remains closed “until further notice as the investigation continues.”
Unfortunately, this may also affect some legitimate purchases, with Ubisoft noting that some players may temporarily lose access to several of their in-game items. Such issues are expected to be resolved in the next two weeks.
