Throughout this guide, we refer to various things that those sex toys are made of, and there is a good reason for that. It’s painfully difficult to bark what other sex toy manufacturers are using and how safe those are that come into contact with your most sensitive body parts. This is due to FDA regulations and how they classify sex toys: medical devices or novelty. The former category requires strict testing and standards, while the latter makes it easier to get products on the market. There is a surefire bet, though. You want your sex toys to be, first and foremost, functional. Porous materials will be almost completely clean and will damage the product and the house with more bacteria in the long run. Second, you want it to be made from materials that won’t waste chemicals, plastics, or other materials during regular use. Silicone is a tricky material because there are so many different ways it can be made, and so many different testing standards in different parts of the world. Honestly, there aren’t enough studies examining which types of silicone are the safest. There are a couple with a strong body of research behind them, as well as standard testing standards: Platinum-depleted silicone and food grade silicone. Food grade is a label regulated by the FDA, and it means that the silicone has been tested to ensure that it does not contain harmful chemicals in food. The medical grade label you will see is often seen, but if it is not returned by some regulatory body or testing standard used to determine if it is medical grade, it leaves me wondering by whom that is not disclosed. If the manufacturer specifies what type of silicone they use, we will list it in the product description. If it is not clear, we will install it as unspecified silicone. That doesn’t mean it’s bad! It just means a certain type used in that the toys are not listed or offered.
